VIRTUAL TALK: “Yale Needs Women” with Anne Gardiner Perkins
June 2, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FREEYALE NEEDS WOMEN
How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant
Special Surprise: The author will talk with two women interviewed for the book
1969 was a landmark year. More than 350,000 rock-n-roll fans flocked to Woodstock, the Boeing 747 jumbo jet made its debut, and the Apollo 11 mission put the first two men on the moon. What else? Yale University, dedicated to graduating “one thousand male leaders every year” finally opened its doors to women. For the very first time, the top female students from small towns and big cities across the nation took a giant step onto the imposing Yale campus and another giant step toward equality in education. Or was it? These pioneering undergraduates were isolated from one another, singled out as oddities and sexual objects and barred from many of the privileges an elite education was supposed to offer. While the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1970s played out in the background, these young women fought against the backward-leaning traditions of a centuries-old institution and created the opportunities that would carry them into the future. Their strength, resilience and courage still resonate today.
