SUMMARY:A Visit with the Night Watchman
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Haunting with (Of Course)\na Historical Twist\nAround Halloween\, the veils between worlds thin out.  Historical sites are magnets for spirits\, and the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House seems to be the epicenter of ghostly activity. Don’t miss this all new\, slightly spooky haunted experience. \nAs in the past\, visitors embark on a 20-minute tour through the Wicks house with their escort\, the Museums’ Night Watchman.  What happens inside the house is a closely guarded secret\, but the eerie characters and mildly macabre scenes are based on real-life historical figures and actual happenings in Falmouth. Be forewarned\, the Museums’ grounds also feature spooky surprises. \nBarbara Sillery\, author of “Ghosts of Cape Cod\,” will spin spectral stories for visitors during the short waits between tours.  After the tour\, “wind down” in the Cultural Center\, where volunteers will serve up cider\, donuts and an interesting handout explaining the “truths” behind this year’s haunted stories. \nAdmission is $10/adults; $6/children 12 and under; $25/families of four. The rain date is Sunday\, October 27. Tours start at the Hallett Barn Visitor Center. The event is sponsored by Chapman\, Cole & Gleason Funeral Homes and Baker Monument Co. \nPlease note: This event is recommended for families with children age 6 and older. DESCRIPTION:  \nA collaboration between The Museum on the Green and JFK Hyannis Museum \nA special screening and discussion with the film’s producer and director\, Larry Shore. \nWednesday November 14\, 11:00 – 12:30 am  \nUsing previously unseen archival materials\, and interviews in South Africa and the US\, this fascinating documentary tells the unknown story of Senator Robert Kennedy’s important visit to South Africa in June 1966 during the worst years of Apartheid. The film evokes the connections between the American Civil Rights Movement and the Anti-Apartheid Movement in South Africa. The filmmakers find witnesses to this moment in time through the sights and sounds of present-day South Africa. \nThe film highlights RFK’s meeting with the banned leader and first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize\, Chief Albert Luthuli. The film follows Kennedy to the site of his famous “Ripple of Hope” speech at the University of Cape Town\, his visit to a pro-Apartheid university and Soweto. We witness Kennedy publicly challenging the dominant Cold War ideology that Anti-Communism\, espoused by repressive regimes like that in South Africa\, should be the only factor determining American foreign policy.

DESCRIPTION:This is the story of how America’s first women soldiers helped win World War I\, earned the vote\, and fought the U.S. Army. In 1918\, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France. They were masters of the latest technology: the telephone switchboard. General John Pershing\, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces\, demanded female “wire experts” when he discovered that inexperienced doughboys were unable to keep him connected with troops under fire. Without communications for even an hour\, the army would collapse. \nWhile suffragettes picketed the White House and President Woodrow Wilson struggled to persuade a segregationist Congress to give women of all races the vote\, these competent and courageous young women swore the Army oath. Elizabeth Cobbs reveals the challenges they faced in a war zone where male soldiers welcomed\, resented\, wooed\, mocked\, saluted\, and ultimately celebrated them. They received a baptism by fire when German troops pounded Paris with heavy artillery. Some followed “Black Jack” Pershing to battlefields where they served through shelling and bombardment. Grace Banker\, their 25-year-old leader\, won the Distinguished Service Medal. \nThe army discharged the last Hello Girls in 1920\, the same year Congress ratified the Nineteenth Amendment granting the ballot. When the operators sailed home\, the army unexpectedly dismissed them without veterans’ benefits. They began a sixty-year battle that a handful of survivors carried to triumph in 1979. SUMMARY:Jessa Piaia: "Meet Amelia Earhart: First Lady of the Air"
DESCRIPTION:HISTORIC RE-ENACTOR portrays AMELIA EARHART\nHistoric re-enactor\, Jessa Piaia\, will present a one-person interpretation of pioneer aviatrix Amelia Earhart entitled “Meet Amelia Earhart (1897-1937): First Lady of the Air”. The program is set in 1936\, when Earhart was a popular speaker on the national circuit and preparing for take-off for the around-the-world flight in 1937.  Inspired at an early age by the suffragist movement\, Earhart identified with the generation of “the new woman” who had won the right to vote in 1920.  Acclaimed as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932\, she was previously part of the 1928 “Friendship” flight departing from East Boston Harbor on its historic trans-Atlantic flight.  At the time of the “Friendship” flight\, Amelia was living in Medford\, while working as a social worker at the Denison House in downtown Boston\, and helping to design an airplane hangar at the Denison Airfield in Squantum\, MA.  She also served as a role model while pursuing activities that ranged from being a guidance counselor at Purdue University\, an aviation writer and author of three books\, to designing luggage and a line of clothes for “women who live actively.”  Sponsored by (name of group)\, the program runs approximately 45 minutes in length with an informal Q&A to follow.  A collection of photographs\, news clippings\, and articles written by and about Amelia Earhart will be available for audience examination before and after the performance. \nClad in basic aviator gear and bearing a striking resemblance to the subject of her character portrayal\, Ms. Piaia uses drama to reveal the accomplishments\, struggles\, and contributions of women to American history.  She is acclaimed for “recreating history in the fullest sense\,” and for using “solid research\, compelling writing\, and artistry to bring off a one-woman show\, perhaps the most difficult kind of acting challenge.”  She performs at educational institutions\, museums\, libraries\, worship services\, and historical organizations.  An eleven-site state tour of Susan B. Anthony in 1994 was supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities\, and a grant for a mini-tour was awarded in 1997 for “From Suffragist to Citizen: A Conversation with Susan B. Anthony and Eleanor Roosevelt\,” with Piaia (as Anthony) and Elena Dodd (as Roosevelt). \n  \nMs. Piaia studied performance at London’s Oval House Theatre and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.  She currently works at Harvard University.  Research for this program began in 1992 and was conducted in the Amelia Earhart Collection at the Schlesinger Library\, Radcliffe Institute\, Cambridge (MA); the Microtext Department at the Boston Public Library; the Earhart Archives at the Medford (MA) Public Library\, and the Amelia Earhart Branch Library in North Hollywood (CA).  She performs at educational and cultural settings throughout New England\, and the Gerald Ford Museum in Grand Rapids (MI) on Presidents’ Day 2004; Miami University campus in Hamilton (OH) in 2006; and the Martin County Public Library in Stuart (FL) as part of Chautauqua South Series in 2008. \n\n \n\n\n\nMeet Amelia Earhart\, Sept. 23\, 2018\n\n\nOne Attendee $15.00 USDTwo Attendees $30.00 USDThree Attendees $45.00 USDFour Attendees $60.00 USD\n\n\n\n\n \nThis lecture made possible in part by a grant from Mass Humanities.

The story of America’s industrial decline is all too familiar—and yet\, somehow\, still hard to fathom. \nJamie Sayen spent years interviewing residents of Groveton\, New Hampshire\, about the century-long saga of their company town. The community’s paper mill had been its economic engine since the early 1900s. Purchased and revived by local ownership in the postwar decades\, the mill merged with Diamond International in 1968. His first Peter Fallon novel\, Back Bay\, established him as “a master storyteller.” He has been following the lives of the great and anonymous in American history ever since and has taken readers from the deck of the Mayflower in Cape Cod to Ford’s Theater in The Lincoln Letter to 9/11 and the South Tower in City of Dreams. In his latest\, Bound for Gold\, he sweeps us back to California and the legendary year of 1849. He was the 2005 recipient of the prestigious New England Book Award\, given to an author “whose body of work stands as a significant contribution to the culture of the region.” And in 2015\, the USS CONSTITUTION Museum gave him the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for “patriotic pride\, artful scholarship\, and an eclectic interest in the sea and things maritime.” He serves on the boards of many of Boston’s historic sites and the Associates of the Boston Public Library. It presents this often-forgotten struggle in an accessible\, conversational\, relevant manner for a wide audience. \nHere are the groundbreaking convention records\, speeches\, newspaper accounts\, letters\, photos\, and drawings of those who fought for women’s right to vote\, all in their own words\, arranged to convey the inherent historical drama. The accessible almanac style allows this entertaining history speak for itself.\n\nIt is full of little-known facts. For instance: When the Constitutional Convention of the thirteen colonies convened to draft the Constitution\, Abigail Adams admonished her husband John Adams to “remember the ladies” (write rights for women into the Constitution!). \nImportant for today’s discussions\, REMEMBER THE LADIES does not extract women’s suffrage from the inseparable concurrent historic endeavors for emancipation\, immigration\, and temperance.
