SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "How Ike Led" with Susan Eisenhower
DESCRIPTION:HOW IKE LED\nThe Principles Behind Eisenhower’s Biggest Decisions\nBy Susan Eisenhower\, a DC policy strategist\, security expert and Ike’s granddaughter\nFew people have made decisions as momentous as Eisenhower. Even fewer have had so many diverse decisions to make. From D-Day to Little Rock\, from the Korean War to the Cold War crises\, from the Red Scare to the Missile Gap controversies\, Ike was able to give America eight years of peace and prosperity by relying on a core set of principles. He was a man of  strong character\, judgment and personal discipline. His heritage and upbringing informed every decision he made–and he avoided making himself the center of things.  He sought national unity by pursuing the “Middle Way\,” a course that tried to make winners on both sides of any issue.  Ike was not an operational leader. He was a strategic leader who relied on a rigorous pursuit of the facts for decision-making. He could envision the whole\, especially in the context of the long game. He could also see causes and consequences. And\, after making a decision\, he assumed accountability for it\, recognizing that personal responsibility is the bedrock of sound principles. Simply put\, Ike was a steadying force in peace and war. Find out more about one of America’s most remarkable public figures from someone with a very personal connection: his granddaughter. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "When It Was Grand" with LeeAnna Keith
DESCRIPTION:WHEN IT WAS GRAND\nThe Radical Republican History of the Civil War\nIn 1862\, the ardent abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison summarized the events tearing the United States apart: “There is a war because there was a Republican Party. There was a Republican Party because there was an Abolition Party. There was an Abolition Party because there was Slavery.” Garrison’s simple statement expresses the essential truths at the heart of LeeAnna Keith’s When It Was Grand. This is the full story of the Radical Republicans―the champions of abolition–who established a new political party and turned it toward ending slavery. These idealistic Massachusetts preachers and philanthropists\, rugged Midwestern politicians\, and African American activists collaborated to protect escaped slaves from their captors\, to create and defend black military regiments and to win the contest for the soul of their party. People like Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Brown. People like the gruff antislavery general John Fremont and his astute wife\, Jessie Benton Fremont. And people like Abraham Lincoln\, the radicals’ sometime critic and sometime partner. In the 1850s and 1860s\, a powerful faction of the Republican Party stood for a demanding ideal of racial justice―and insisted that their party and nation live up to it. Here is the definitive account of their indelible accomplishment. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Iron Empires: Robber Barons\, Railroads and the Making of Modern America" with Michael Hiltzik
DESCRIPTION:IRON EMPIRES\nRobber Barons\, Railroads\, and the Making of Modern America\nIn 1869\, when the final spike was driven into the Transcontinental Railroad\, few were prepared for its seismic aftershocks. America’s railways\, once a hodgepodge of short\, squabbling lines\, soon exploded into a titanic industry helmed by speculators\, crooks\, and visionaries. Empire builders like Cornelius Vanderbilt\, Jay Gould\, J. P. Morgan\, and E. H. Harriman competed viciously. They transformed the nation’s geography. They sparked stock market frenzies\, panics\, and crashes. And they provoked strikes that upended the relationship between management and labor. The intense competition culminated in a ferocious two-man battle that shook the nation’s financial markets to their foundations and produced dramatic\, lasting changes in the interplay of business and government. For four decades some of the most iconic figures of the Gilded Age drove the country into the twentieth century—and almost sent it off the rails. \nColumnist and reporter Michael A. Hiltzik has written extensively for the Los Angeles Times. In 1999\, he won a beat reporting Pulitzer Prize for co-writing a series of articles with Chuck Philips about corruption in the music industry. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Franklin and Washington: The Founding Partnership" with Edward J. Larson
DESCRIPTION:FRANKLIN AND WASHINGTON\nThe Founding Partnership\nWith Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson\nBenjamin Franklin was an abolitionist freethinker from the urban north. George Washington was a slaveholding general from the agrarian south. These vastly different men had a three-decade bond that helped forge the United States.  And yet no one has really talked about their brilliant teamwork in the centuries since.  Until now. Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Edward J. Larson shows how the pair worked together to advance the American project.  During the French and Indian War\, Franklin supplied the wagons for General Edward Braddock’s ill-fated assault on Fort Duquesne; Washington then buried the general’s body under the dirt road traveled by those retreating wagons. After long supporting British rule\, both became key early proponents of independence. Their friendship gained historical significance during the American Revolution when Franklin led America’s diplomatic mission in Europe (securing money and an alliance with France) and Washington commanded the Continental Army. Victory required both efforts to succeed\, and success\, in turn\, required their mutual coordination and cooperation. In the 1780s\, the two sought to strengthen the union\, leading to the framing and ratification of the Constitution\, the founding document that bears their stamp. Franklin and Washington—the two most revered figures in the early republic—staked their lives and fortunes on the American experiment in liberty and were committed to its preservation.  How would they view the stress these founding institutions have come under today? SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Women with Silver Wings" with Katherine Landeck
DESCRIPTION:THE WOMEN WITH SILVER WINGS\nThe Inspiring True Story of the Women Airforce Pilots of World War II\nWhen the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941\, Cornelia Fort was already in the air. She had escaped Nashville’s debutante scene at the age of 22 and headed to Hawaii for a fresh start as a flight instructor. When the bombs began to fall\, Fort and her student were in the middle of a lesson. They barely made it back to ground that ill-fated morning. Still\, when the U.S. Army Air Forces put out a call for women pilots to aid the war effort\, Fort was one of the first to respond. She became one of just over 1\,100 women from across the nation to make it through the Army’s rigorous selection process and earn her silver wings. \nThe Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was the brainchild of trailblazing pilots Nancy Love and Jacqueline Cochran.  It gave women like Fort the chance to serve their country—and to prove that women aviators were just as skilled as men. While not authorized to serve in combat\, the WASP helped train male pilots for service abroad and ferried bombers and pursuits across the country. Tragically\, 38 WASP didn’t survive the war. But this social experiment seemed to be a resounding success until\, with the tides of war turning\, Congress clipped the women’s wings. The program disbanded and the women went home. But their bond remained.  Over the next few decades\, they came together to fight for recognition as the military veterans they were—and for their place in history.  PURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n  \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Rebel Cinderella" with Adam Hochschild
DESCRIPTION:REBEL CINDERELLA\nFrom Rags to Riches to Radical\, the Epic Journey of Rose Pastor Stokes\nThis is the stuff of fairy tales: poor Russian immigrant falls madly in love with the heir to a great American Fortune.  She is Rose Pastor. He is James Graham Phelps Stokes\, the crown prince of the Phelps Stokes dynasty. Member of the legendary 400 families of New York high society. Friends with the Morgans and the Vanderbilts.  And he’s totally smitten\, too.  This unlikely match and marriage drew front page headlines in newspapers all over the world from its astonishing beginning to its equally astonishing end. Together\, this unusual couple joined the burgeoning Socialist Party and moved among the liveliest group of activists and dreamers this country has ever seen. Rose stirred audiences to tears\, led strikes of restaurant waiters and garment workers and campaigned alongside the country’s earliest feminists. In fact\, President Woodrow Wilson labeled her “one of the dangerous influences of the country” for publicly defying laws against distributing information about birth control.  Yes\, Rose was far ahead of her time.  Ironically\, this fairy tale didn’t have a happy ending for the charismatic campaigner for social justice. In a way no one foresaw\, her too-short life ended in the same abject poverty with which it began. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "No Useless Mouth" with Rachel Herrmann
DESCRIPTION:Please Note Time Change\, Now Scheduled for Noon\nNO USELESS MOUTH:\nWaging War and Fighting Hunger in the American Revolution\nIn the era of the American Revolution\, guns weren’t the only weapons of war.  Hunger was also at the center of every power struggle. In peaceful times\, gifts of food\, ceremonial feasts and a shared experience of hunger were part of the diplomacy between the British\, Patriots and Native Americans. However\, when diplomacy failed\, food became a powerful tool of warfare. Native Americans asserted authority by destroying food stores and cutting off supply chains. Black colonists also stole and destroyed food to ward off hunger and carve out tenuous spaces of freedom. However\, because white British and United State officials were best equipped at the politics of food\, the others not only lost the battle against hunger\, but also the larger struggle for power. By exploring three interrelated behaviors—food diplomacy\, victual imperialism\, and victual warfare—during this turbulent period in history\, you’ll never look at warfare\, or food\, in quite the same way again. \n  \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The FIRST First Ladies" with Michelle Coughlin
DESCRIPTION:THE FIRST FIRST LADIES\nThe Informal Political Power of Early American Women\nDuring the 17th and early 18th centuries\, social class was ever-so important. And\, despite the entrenched tradition of patriarchy\, high-ranking women could wield more power than lower-status men. Meet the first First Ladies. The wives of the governors of America’s original thirteen colonies were married to politics—literally and figuratively. Because of this\, they were  particularly well placed to leverage their talents\, status and influence to achieve personal and public goals. Some helped turn political tides; other took public stands that had lasting social consequences. Despite cultural\, regional\, and generational differences\, the colonial First Ladies shared a willingness to impact the world around them—and they did.  This talk\, based on Coughlin’s current book project\, also explores the significant leadership roles Native American and African-American women played within their communities and beyond. \nMichelle Marchetti Coughlin is the author of One Colonial Woman’s World: The Life and Writings of Mehetabel Chandler Coit (1673-1758) and Penelope Winslow: Plymouth Colony First Lady: Re-Imagining a Life. She serves on the board of the Abigail Adams Birthplace and as Museum Administrator of Boston’s Gibson House Museum. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Boston Massacre: A Family History" with Serena Zabin
DESCRIPTION:THE BOSTON MASSACRE: A FAMILY HISTORY\nFact. On a late winter evening in 1770\, British soldiers shot and killed five local\, unarmed citizens. However\, from the very beginning\, one fascinating truth has been obscured from this often-told story: the conflicts between the British troops and the increasingly rebellious colonists leading up to the historic event were not just political. They were also personal. Very personal. In an antagonistic 1768 decision by army officers\, the first British troops sent to subdue the tax-resistant Bostonians were housed among them\, making them neighbors.  If that didn’t complicate things enough\, the regimental wives and children that accompanied these armies were also a part of this mix. To stir things up even further\, some soldiers married local lasses. Diary entries\, personal letters to friends\, fiery letters to newspapers\, sarcastic ditties sung at social events\, and court and church records expose the complex interactions which bonded and separated the residents of Boston and the soldiers encamped among them. As Zabin explores historical crannies others have ignored\, we begin to see the intensely human sparks that fueled the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "In the Wake of the Mayflower: The First Encounter" with Karen Rinaldo and Kevin Doyle
DESCRIPTION:IN THE WAKE OF THE MAYFLOWER\nThe First Encounter\n \nIn the Wake of the Mayflower is the story of life after the Mayflower’s arrival–from The First  Encounter  through the 50 years of peace that ended with King Philip’s  War. It highlights the mutually-dependent relationship between the Pilgrims and the indigenous Wampanoags\, documented in  Karen Rinaldo’s depiction of “The First Thanksgiving /1621.” This painting has been met with critical acclaim by historians\, the National Park Service and Wampanoag leaders for its positive eye on the first decade of this “New World.” \nThe painting\, a commission from the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (the Pilgrims Church)\, was designated a “Gift to the Nation.” It was the inspiration for the book. The National Museum of Illustration in Newport\, RI\, requested a reproduction  of the 1621 painting and the original artwork for the cover of the book to include in a 2021 exhibit titled “Equality  for All.” \nKaren Rinaldo and Kevin M. Doyle\, two lovers of history\, collaborated to create the book with information collected over a span of 50 years. Their research of the 1621 painting directly influenced the authors; the 400th Commemoration of the Mayflower impacted the timing. \nKaren is a visual historian whose work has been shown at Plimoth Plantation. Kevin writes and lectures on historic places and events. In the  Wake of the Mayflower is written in a vignette style and features lesser-known facts about the Pilgrim’s adventure and brief histories of all 15 Cape Cod towns. \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "A History of Theater on Cape Cod" with Susan Mellen
DESCRIPTION:A HISTORY OF THEATER ON CAPE COD\nTheater on the Cape began in 1916 when a group of artists and writers in Provincetown mounted a production of a one-act play\, Bound East for Cardiff\, by a little-known playwright\, Eugene O’Neill. They staged the play in a rickety old theater on a wharf in what was then little more than a sleepy fishing village. From that artists’ colony—and others like it across the Cape and Islands—it grew into the constantly expanding theater universe it is today. The theatrical descendants of O’Neill and the Provincetown Players continue to present classical drama\, contemporary hits and new\, experimental works to audiences that have come to expect the best. In her tour of the theaters from Provincetown to Falmouth\, author and entertainment columnist Susan Mellen reveals the rich past behind a unique cultural treasure. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution" with Lindsay Chervinsky
DESCRIPTION:THE CABINET:\nGeorge Washington and the Creation of an American Institution\nGeorge Washington took his oath of office as the first President of the United States in 1789.  Two and a half years later\, he called his first cabinet meeting. Seriously?  That’s right.  The US Constitution hadn’t created or provided for such a body. In fact\, the delegates to the Constitution Convention had explicitly rejected the idea. Faced with diplomatic crises\, domestic insurrections\, constitutional challenges and a Congress lacking help\, Washington decided he needed a group of advisors he could turn to. He modeled his new cabinet on the councils of war he had led as commander of the Continental Army. In the early days\, the cabinet served at the president’s pleasure.  Throughout his administration\, Washington tinkered with its structure\, at times calling regular meetings\, at other times preferring written advice and individual discussions.  Department secretaries Alexander Hamilton\, Thomas Jefferson\, Henry Knox\, and Edmund Randolph convened for the first cabinet meeting in 1791 . Their roles had far-reaching consequences. The tensions between Hamilton and Jefferson heightened partisanship and contributed to the development of the first party system. And as Washington faced an increasingly recalcitrant Congress\, the cabinet helped him expand the role of the president and the executive branch\, laying the foundation for one of the most powerful bodies in the federal government today. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Wasteland: The Great War and the Origins of Modern Horror" with W. Scott Poole
DESCRIPTION:WASTELAND:\nThe Great War and the Origins of Modern Horror\nThe War to End all Wars remade the world’s map and created new global powers. It also brought destruction and carnage no one had ever seen before.  The apocalyptic-like world of 1918 was nothing like the world of 1914. Four years of machine guns\, poison gas and mortar shells wrought a new reign of suffering and terror. Millions were injured. Millions more were killed. By war’s end\, its horrors had crept into the world’s collective psyche and changed everything. Including the arts. Major horror films\, like J ’accuse (1919)\, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)\, and Nosferatu (1922) all appeared within a few years after the war. Almost all were produced\, directed and written by veterans who had seen the worst firsthand. The same darkness also crept into literature and other artistic references. In this fascinating book\, the historian and Bram Stoker Award nominee looks at how the horror genre slowly evolved and took shape because of the fears of a generation ruined by war. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Furious Hours" with Casey Cep
DESCRIPTION:FURIOUS HOURS\nMurder\, Fraud\, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee\nThere are two stories here. The first goes back to the 1970s\, down into the Deep South. Reverend Willie Maxwell\, a rural preacher\, was accused of murdering five of his family members to collect the money from the insurance policies he took out on them. With the help of a savvy lawyer\, he escaped justice for years until a relative shot him dead at the funeral of his last victim. Despite hundreds of witnesses\, Maxwell’s murderer was acquitted–thanks to the same attorney who had previously defended the Reverend.  Now\, fast forward to 2015. While reporting on Harper Lee’s novel\, “Go Set a Watchman\,” writer Casey Cep visited the author’s hometown in Alabama and discovered Lee had once spent years working on a non-fiction account of this very same case. Cep then began researching the case and the author’s life\, parts of which have always been shrouded in mystery. In “Furious Hours\,” she tells the story of the shocking 1970s murders\, the courtroom drama and the racial politics of the Deep South Harper Lee wanted to tell. She also delivers a deeply moving portrait of one of the country’s most beloved writers: her struggle with fame\, success\, and the mystery of artistic creativity. \nOne of President Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of the Year\nAmazon’s Nonfiction Book of the Year\nA New York Times Notable Book\nOne of the Washington Post’s Best Books of the Year\nOne of The Economist’s Best Books of the Year\nOne of TIME Magazine’s Ten Best Nonfiction Books of the Year\nNew Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association’s Nonfiction Book of the Year\nBaillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction Shortlist\nCarnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction Longlist \n  \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: Demagogue: "The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy" with Larry Tye
DESCRIPTION:DEMAGOGUE\nThe Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy\nHe’s been called the most dangerous demagogue in American history. Perhaps no other man has caused so much damage in such a short time. When Joe McCarthy finally made it to the Senate\, he flailed around in search of an agenda. Finally\, after three years\, he hit upon one: anti-communism. By recklessly charging everyone from George Marshall to much of the State Department with treason\, he whipped the nation into a frenzy of paranoia\, accusations\, loyalty oaths and terror. He destroyed many careers–even entire lives. When the public finally turned on him\, he came crashing down\, dying of alcoholism in 1957. With exclusive access to McCarthy’s personal and professional papers\, medical and military records\, and recently unsealed transcripts of his closed-door Congressional hearings\, bestselling author Larry Tye reveals the chaotic\, meteoric rise and ultimate fall of one of the most influential and controversial men in American history. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENT BRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email museumsonthegreen.org. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Einstein's War" with Matthew Stanley
DESCRIPTION:EINSTEIN’S WAR:\nHow Relativity Trimphed Amid the Vicious Nationalism of World War\n“Stanley is a storyteller par excellence.”–The Washington Post\nThe Great War\, the industrialized slaughter that bled Europe from 1914 to 1918\, shaped Albert Einstein’s life and work.  Although he never held a rifle\, he formulated the mind-bending theory of general relativity while blockaded—and literally starving–in Berlin. While some of his colleagues were fighting against rabid nationalism or inventing chemical warfare\, Einstein was struggling to craft relativity and persuade the world that this complete revision of our conception of the universe was correct. Victory wasn’t easy on either front. Scientists seeking to confirm Einstein’s ideas were arrested as spies. Technical journals were banned as enemy propaganda. Colleagues died in the trenches. Einstein was separated from his most crucial ally\, astronomer A. S. Eddington\, by barbed wire and U-boats. Finally\, in May of 1919\, when Europe was still in chaos from the war\, Eddington led a globe-spanning expedition to catch a fleeting solar eclipse.  It was a rare opportunity to confirm Einstein’s bold prediction that light has weight. Many saw the result as the proof of relativity—which put Einstein on front pages around the world. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "When Women Won the Right to Vote: History\, Myth\, and Memory" with Lisa Tetrault
DESCRIPTION:WHEN WOMEN WON THE RIGHT TO VOTE:\nHistory\, Myth\, and Memory\nHow well do you know the 19th Amendment? When women achieved passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920\, they did not win the right to vote—despite repeated claims that they did. Just what\, then\, did the women’s suffrage amendment do? Join Dr. Lisa Tetrault for a discussion of this often misinterpreted and misunderstood history and discover how 1920 is part of a much larger and longer story about the pursuit of voting rights\, a struggle that is unfinished and ongoing today. \nDr. Tetrault is an Associate Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University and the author of the prize-winning book\, The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women’s Suffrage Movement\, 1848-1898.  She is also the second recipient of the Falmouth Historical Society’s Katharine Lee Bates Historian Award. The award was established in 2019 to honor educators\, authors and chroniclers whose historical scholarship has enriched their communities\, their states and their country. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Atomic Spy: The Dark Lives of Klaus Fuchs" with Nancy Thorndike Greenspan
DESCRIPTION:ATOMIC SPY:\nThe Dark Lives of Klaus Fuchs\nGerman by birth. British by naturalization. Communist by conviction. Klaus Fuchs was a brilliant scientist\, a fearless Nazi resister and an infamous spy. In 1950\, he was convicted of espionage for handing over the designs of the plutonium bomb to the Russians\, putting an end to America’s nuclear hegemony and single-handedly heating up the Cold War. Fuchs was one of the most dangerous agents in American and British history. But\, was he really evil? Using archives long-hidden in Germany and intimate family correspondence\, Nancy Thorndike Greenspan explores the moral and political ambiguity of the times and the ideals Fuchs struggled with throughout his entire life. As a university student in Germany\, he stood up to Nazi terror and joined the Communists largely because they were the only ones resisting them. In 1933\, he escaped to Britain. In 1940\, he was arrested as a German émigré–an “enemy alien”–and sent to an internment camp in Canada. The renowned physicist Max Born\, his mentor at university\, worked to facilitate his release. After years of struggle and ideological conflict\, the scientist’s loyalties were firmly split when he joined the atomic bomb project. In 1941\, he started passing top secret research to the Soviets and continued for years from deep within the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Why did he do it? Greenspan’s insights suggest he was driven not just by his Communist convictions but also by a desire to level the playing field of the world powers in the interest of peace. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Formation: A Woman's Memoir of Stepping Out of Line" with Ryan Leigh Dostie
DESCRIPTION:FORMATION:\nA Woman’s Memoir of Stepping out of Line\nNamed by “Esquire” as one of the Best Nonfiction Books of the Year\nRyan Dotie never imagined herself on the front lines of a war halfway around the world. But a conversation with an Army recruiter in her high-school cafeteria changed the course of her life.  After being hired as a linguist in Military Intelligence\, she needed to find a space for herself in the testosterone-filled world of the Army barracks. She was holding her own until the unthinkable happened: she was raped by a fellow soldier. The course of her life changed again. While struggling with PTSD and commanders who didn’t trust her story\, she found herself fighting an unexpected war\, one of isolation and trauma.  Formation is her extraordinary journey to prove her worth\, physically and mentally\, in a world where the odds are stacked against her. \n“Formation” grabs us by the collar and never relents\, much like Dostie herself\, whose path to independence gets paved with blood and sacrifice. Her gripping memoir lays bare the pain of proving yourself in a man’s world\, but also the rich rewards. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Dynasty" with Jeff Benedict
DESCRIPTION:THE DYNASTY\nThey had never won a championship. They were nearly bankrupt. And\, they were the laughingstock of the NFL. But that all changed in 1994 when Robert Kraft acquired the franchise and brought head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady on board. Since then\, the New England Patriots have made ten trips to the Super Bowl and won six. Their twenty-year reign atop the NFL stands as the longest in league history. How did they do it?  Acclaimed journalist Jeff Benedict interviewed the major players and more than 200 insiders to find out. And\, his exhaustive research uncovered surprising new details about the inner workings of a team notorious for its secrecy.  The Dynasty spills all the secrets and delivers a deeply satisfying look at one of the greatest professional sports teams of our time.  Maybe of all time. \nFor two decades we’ve been peering up at the castle looming over the American sportscape with the same mixture of awe\, suspicion\, and envy with which peasants have peered up at palisades for millennia. So when a deft and lyrical serf named Benedict slips inside\, lowers the drawbridge\, and waves us in to see the ramparts\, towers\, turrets\, and castle keep where the Brady-Belichick-Kraft trinity ruled . . . how can a peasant resist?” —Gary Smith\, longtime Sports Illustrated writer and author of “Beyond the Game” \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "They Knew They Were Pilgrims" with John Turner
DESCRIPTION:THEY KNEW THEY WERE PILGRIMS:\nPlymouth Colony and the Contest for American Liberty\nSinners or saints? In 1620\, separatists from the Church of England set sail across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower. They saw themselves as spiritual pilgrims\, seeking the freedom to worship God in accordance with their understanding of the Bible. Others have an alternative\, more dispiriting view of the Pilgrims.  In it\, they were religious zealots who persecuted dissenters\, stole land and  waged war with the Native peoples.  Four hundred years later\, we’re still trying to determine whether the Pilgrims were otherworldly saints or extraordinary sinners. By revealing the complex world the Pilgrims inhabited\, John G. Turner moves beyond these disparate narratives and “gives an old familiar story remarkable new life and power.” \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Cape Cod and the Tea Crisis of 1773" with Mary Beth Norton
DESCRIPTION:CAPE COD AND THE TEA CRISIS OF 1773\nEveryone knows about America’s famous “tea party.” On December 16\, 1773\, American Patriots dressed as natives tossed 343 chests of  East India Company tea into Boston Harbor.  However\, few know that five days earlier a fourth ship bound for Boston wrecked on Cape Cod–and some of its cargo remained here.  In fact it was the only EIC tea that actually became available to the colonists.  Historian Mary Beth Norton is the first person to thoroughly investigate what happened next–and she’s ready to share all the details. \nNorton’s knowledge about Cape Cod’s little known involvement in the tea crisis is drawn from her much-anticipated new book\, 1774: the Long Year of Revolution. It covers sixteen critical months–when traditional loyalists to King George III began their discordant “discussions” that led to their acceptance of the inevitability of war against the British Empire to the clashes at Lexington and Concord in mid-April 1775. \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Seducing and Killing Nazis: Dutch Resistance Heroines of World War II" with Sophie Poldermans
DESCRIPTION:SEDUCING AND KILLING NAZIS\nHannie\, Truus and Freddie: Dutch Resistance Heroines of WWII\nThis is the astonishing true story of three teenage Dutch girls\, Hannie Schaft and sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen. When Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in World War II\, they fought back. They found safe houses for Jewish children and gathered vital intelligence for the Resistance. They also seduced high-ranking Nazi officers\, lured them into the woods and killed them. They did what they did “because it had to be done.” Above all\, they tried to remain human in inhuman circumstances. Hannie was executed by the Nazis three weeks before the end of the war and became the icon of female Dutch resistance. While Truus and Freddie survived the war\, they were forever haunted by the demons of their past. Author Sophie Poldermans knows this firsthand. She worked closely with them for over a decade as a board member of the National Hannie Schaft Foundation. She’ll tell you more about these remarkable women and why their story remains important today. \n  \nFREE EVENT/PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the talk. REGISTER\n(Sorry\, no phone calls please.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we are all working remotely.) \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Sword and the Shield" with Peniel Joseph
DESCRIPTION:THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD\nThe Revolutionary Lives of Malcom X and Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n“The Sword and the Shield” is a landmark. It is what happens when one of America’s greatest historians of African America shines the same light on two of African America’s greatest historical figures. Peniel Joseph deploys his supreme talents as a biographer and movement historian to interweave the world-shattering lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.”―Abram X. Kendi\, author of “How to Be an Antiracist” \nTo most Americans\, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. represent contrasting ideals: self-defense vs. nonviolence; black power vs. civil rights; the sword vs. the shield. The struggle for black freedom is wrought with the same contrasts. While nonviolent direct action is remembered as an unassailable part of American democracy\, the movement’s militancy is either vilified or erased outright. In The Sword and the Shield\, Peniel E. Joseph upends these misconceptions and reveals a nuanced portrait of two men who\, despite markedly different backgrounds\, inspired and pushed each other throughout their adult lives. This is a strikingly revisionist biography\, not only of Malcolm and Martin\, but also of the movement and era they came to define.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL RE-ENACTMENT: Sheryl Faye as Susan B. Anthony
DESCRIPTION:SUSAN B. ANTHONY\nRe-Enactor\, Sheryl Faye\nThis is going to be the best party ever. One of the most famous women in American history is celebrating her 200th birthday this year—and you’re invited. Susan B. Anthony was born February 15\, 1820 in Adams\, Massachusetts.  The famous social reformer and activist devoted her life to racial\, gender and educational equality and played a prominent role in the women’s suffrage movement. We can only imagine the stories she’ll tell: perhaps she’ll share memories of  her lifelong friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, the time she was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester\, New York\, and convicted in a widely publicized trial\, or the day she celebrated her 80th birthday in the White House at the invitation of President William McKinley.  Meet this fascinating pioneer and find out why the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution giving women the right to vote became known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. \n \n \n \n\nFREE EVENT\nThis event has been pre-recorded. You do not have to pre-register. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Cult of Glory: The Bold and Brutal History of the Texas Rangers" with Doug Swanson
DESCRIPTION:CULT OF GLORY\nThe Bold and Brutal History of the Texas Rangers\nSaddle up.  We’re heading West for some Lone Star history.  It’s 1823. Texas is still part of Mexico. And\, this very wild and very violent frontier surely needs tamin’. Enter the Texas Rangers.  Early on\, the propertied power structures of Texas used this bold and brutal bunch as enforcers\, protectors and officially sanctioned killers.  They fought the fierce Comanches\, chased outlaws\, and served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. As life in the Lone Star state “calmed down” a bit\, the Rangers kept the peace in boomtowns\, caught cattle-rustlers and patrolled the perilous Texas-Mexico border.  Now remember\, everything’s bigger in Texas.  Countless pulp novels and movies have celebrated the Rangers as Wild West supermen. In many cases\, they were. Sometimes they weren’t.  Cult of Glory sets the record straight. This twenty-first century reckoning does justice to their heroic moments and put their atrocities\, brutality\, oppression\, and corruption on record. \nFREE EVENT/PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the talk. REGISTER\n(Sorry\, no phone calls please.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we are all working remotely.) \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Pleasures of Age: Old Women and Political Power in the Women's Suffrage Movement" with Corinne Field
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTHE PLEASURES OF AGE:\nOld Women and Political Power in the Women’s Sufrage Movement\nOn her seventieth birthday in 1885\, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton delivered a speech on “The Pleasures of Age”. She declared that “fifty not fifteen is the heyday of woman’s life.”  While touring the country in the 1870s\, Sojourner Truth turned her embodied performance of old age into a political claim for financial reparations owed formerly enslaved people.  By the 1890s\, white suffragists hailed Susan B. Anthony as the “grand old woman of America” and compared her favorably to presidents Lincoln and Washington. In the nineteenth century\, women suffragists demanded respect and security for older women as an essential dimension of political empowerment. Corrine Field\, an Associate Professor of Women\, Gender & Sexuality at the University of Virginia\, will tell you why.  She’ll also tell you why these hopes remain largely unrealized over a century later. \nCorinne Field  is currently completing a monograph entitled “Grand Old Women and Modern Girls: Age\, Race\, and Power in the US Women’s Rights Movement\, 1870 to 1920” and co-editing with an interdisciplinary anthology on the global history of black girlhood with LaKisha Simmons. In 2018-2019\, she was the Mellon-Schlesinger Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, Harvard University. \n  \nFREE EVENT/PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the talk. REGISTER\n(Sorry\, no phone calls please.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we are all working remotely.) \n\n2020 WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE COMMEMORATION PROGRAMMING\n“Gaining the Vote: The Road to Women’s Suffrage” Virtual Series\nAugust 2020 marks the centennial of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution\, guaranteeing American women the right to vote.  The Museums on the Green has been awarded a Discussion Grant from Mass Humanities/the National Endowment for the Humanities to support “Gaining the Vote: The Road to Women’s Suffrage\,” a series of virtual talks and performances highlighting the long road to women’s suffrage. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "A Furious Sky: The Five Hundred Year History of America's Hurricanes" with Eric Jay Dolin
DESCRIPTION:A FURIOUS SKY:\nThe Five-Hundred-Year History of America’s Hurricane\nEach year\, hurricanes menace North America from June through November.  Each one is as powerful as 10\,000 nuclear bombs.  Each one\, from the nameless storms that threatened Columbus’s New World voyages\, to the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 which had the highest death toll of any natural disaster in American history\, has a story.  They also have heroes\, such as Benjamin Franklin who made important discoveries about these megastorms and Benito Vines\, a nineteenth-century Jesuit priest who devised innovative methods for predicting them. They’ve also changed the course of the world.  In the late 1500s\, hurricanes prevented Spain from expanding its holdings in North America; they also helped shift the tide of the American Revolution.  For centuries\, we’ve learned to survive and adapt to these “local disasters.”  But as the planet continues to warm\, their impact can be more far-ranging than we yet know.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Lincoln on the Verge: Thirteen Days to Washington" with Ted Widmer
DESCRIPTION:LINCOLN ON THE VERGE:\nThirteen Days to Washington\nFebruary 11\, 1861.  On the eve of his 52nd birthday\, Abraham Lincoln boarded a train. The President-Elect of the United States was on the way to the White House for his inauguration\, an inauguration Southerners vowed to prevent by any means necessary. He was uncertain what he would find when he arrived there—if he arrived there. Bankrupt and rudderless\, the government was on the verge of collapse. To make matters worse\, he learned of a conspiracy to assassinate him as he passed through Baltimore. Yet\, from the moment the Presidential Special left the station\, a new Lincoln was on display.  Drawing on all his mental and physical reserves\, he spoke constantly and improvised brilliantly from the moving train to save the Republic. During these pivotal thirteen days before he could take the oath of office\, he saw his country up close and forged an unbreakable bond with the American people.  Meet one of America’s presidents on the verge of greatness in this historical and literary achievement. \n“A Lincoln classic…superb….So much has been written about Abraham Lincoln that it’s rare when a historian discovers an episode in his life that\, if fully developed and interpreted\, yields important new insights. Ted Widmer has done just that…” —The Washington Post \n\nFREE EVENT/PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the talk. REGISTER\n(Sorry\, no phone calls please.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we are all working remotely.)\n \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
