SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This Event has reached capacity and is SOLD OUT.\nThe opening reception for Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past will be held on Friday\, Oct. 6\, 4 to 6 p.m.\, at the Falmouth Historical Society’s Museums on the Green (55 Palmer Ave. Falmouth). Calliope Poetry’s postcard exhibition will be on display until May 10\, 2024. \nThe Falmouth Public Library’s trove of postcards includes depictions the town throughout the decades (since the early 1900s)\, with many historical images of each of Falmouth’s villages. The postcards capture the spirit of the past and bring the people who wrote them alive again\, with all their unique personalities\, quirks\, and humor. \nEach card has its own story\, and this project enabled local literary and visual artists to use those stories to reflect on and sometimes reinterpret the postcards’ images and messages as a way to enter Falmouth’s history—to capture the contrast between past and present\, and to celebrate the unchanging character of the town. Calliope Poetry hopes this exhibit prompts a memory of your own. \nPlease re-register as capacity is limited\, this is a free event. \nWish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past was made possible through a generous grant from the Falmouth Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, the Town of Falmouth and the Falmouth ArtMarket. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of our newest exhibition – Sales by the Sea: Historic Falmouth Businesses!  Members & Guests Only – Please register online \nThe coastal topography has defined the character of those who have lived and worked in the town of Falmouth\, Massachusetts. From whaling to tourism\, the town has thrived off its rich connection to the sea over the last three hundred years. Beach tourism drove the town to create new businesses and accommodate visitors by rail\, sea\, and the automobile. By the 20th century\, in addition to growing food for their own families\, some farmers were specializing for sale to wider markets. Our sandy soil offered ideal growing areas for the berry industry -both strawberries and cranberries- that flourished in the hands of industrious farming families\, many of them newcomers from Portuguese-speaking parts of the world. Falmouth is fortunate to have a high number of family-owned businesses that have been in operation for decades.
