I do not think so! \nJoin the Falmouth Historical Society’s Executive Director Rachel Lovett and Research Manager Meg Costello on an informative and comical journey to hear how New Englanders did not actually celebrate Christmas until the mid to late 19th century. Using the Society’s c. 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House\, as a backdrop\, the pair will share stories about how Christmas evolved into the holiday we love today through literature from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and Falmouth’s own poet Katharine Lee Bates’ “Goody Santa Claus.” From Puritans outlawing Christmas to dubious 19th century Falmouth Congregational ministers frowning upon festivities but secretly supplying gifts for children\, this tour is a fun and informative way to celebrate\, and learn a little more about our New England predecessors. \n$25 per person/$15 Members. The market will have several delicious treats to enjoy with local food trucks\, including The Filling Station. \nThis event is a fundraiser to support the Falmouth Historical Society’s education programs. DESCRIPTION:WASHBURN AT WAR:\nSaturday\, November 11 at 2pm\n$20 Non Member/$10 Members\, please pre-register as space is limited\n\nThe lecture will appeal to anyone interested in the goings on during World War Two on the Cape. We cover the big stories\, visits to Washburn by Gen. Patton and Heavy Weight\, Champ Joe Louis. There are small stories\, like kids combing the shoreline for discarded Army foil packets of instant coffee\, which their mothers craved because of rationing and lonely soldiers being ordered to release chipmunks they had captured and tried to make pets out of! Join us and you will learn something guaranteed! The lecture is a joint fundraiser for the Falmouth Museum on the Green and the Cape Cod Military Museum.\n\n\nJoe Yukna Bio: \nMy interest in the Military history of the Cape started when I worked as a Department of Defense Police Officer on Camp Edwards/Otis ANGB in the late 1980’s. Driving around the base and seeing all the abandoned buildings made me wonder what went on here. I put out a call to get a museum going on Cape Cod.  Jerry Ellis answered that call. We had secured two barracks and six surrounding acres on Camp Edwards then an open base. September 11th ended that phase of the Military Museum.  After a hiatus we have been working on getting a venue to tell our amazing story. We have been collecting artifacts\, and information on military activities here on the Cape and the overseas activities of units that trained here. We have helped out various historical societies with military displays. We offer a series of photo lectures to educate the public and promote the museum. After leaving the D.O.D. Police force\, I started my own dog training business and am better known as Joe the Dogman. I am the son of a WWII /Korean War Navy Veteran and the Father of an Army War on Terror Veteran. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:The Bells of Falmouth
DESCRIPTION:Our meeting in November will feature a talk by Mr. Kenneth Peal\, a retired engineer\, who has been exploring bells in Falmouth for many years. He will tell us about some of Falmouth’s bells and the gems of history that they bring. They include church bells\, school bells\, fire bells and even a bell that was saved from a WHOI research ship before it went to the scrap yard. He will introduce us to how bells work\, how they are made and the many ways they can be rung. He will describe some newly discovered bells in town\, historic bells he found that were previously not recorded by people who keep track of such things\, a couple of mysteries and even a bell controversy. The talk will end in a nod to the season with a Christmas bell story. \n$20 Non-members/$10Members. Includes appetizers and wine. Limited capacity\, please register online. \nMr. Peal was born and educated in Canada and emigrated with his young family to Falmouth in 1971 to take a job as an electrical engineer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During many years at WHOI\, his work changed from the early days of learning how to use room-sized computers at sea to designing and deploying underwater instruments that often have several computers inside a small pressure case. His travels to test and deploy these instruments took him on ships to most of the world’s oceans and to the high artic where he lived in ice camps for several weeks at a time. \nNow retired\, he volunteers around town and actively follows his interest in things historic and environmental. One of his hobbies is “fixing things that were never meant to be fixed” to fight against the throwaway society. \nHe lives with his wife\, Michele\, in a 160-year old house in West Falmouth which he happily opens to his children and grandchildren especially during the summer. \nRegister Here\n\n

SUMMARY:On the Road to the Mayflower
DESCRIPTION:“On the Road to the Mayflower ” is a prequel to the author’s popular presentation  “In the Wake of the Mayflower” about the Pilgrim experience in America.  Karen Rinaldo is a visual historian from Falmouth whose reputation has been built around historical events. Kevin Doyle is a retired combat veteran who is a writer and lecturer on historic places and events. The presentation opens with photographs of the magnificent flowers and timeless row houses that line the canals of Holland. Small craft continue to dominate Holland’s canals and a strong sense of a proud maritime heritage is on display. Religious persecution of the “Separatists” suffered in England inspired the pilgrimage to Holland before continuing their journey to “the New World.” Karen and Kevin’s research led them to “walk in the footsteps of the Pilgrims” with photographs they took of the landscape that has endured for over 700 years.\n\n$20 non-member/$10 member. DESCRIPTION:This Event has reached capacity and is SOLD OUT.\nThe opening reception for Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past will be held on Friday\, Oct. 6\, 4 to 6 p.m.\, at the Falmouth Historical Society’s Museums on the Green (55 Palmer Ave. Falmouth). Calliope Poetry’s postcard exhibition will be on display until May 10\, 2024. \nThe Falmouth Public Library’s trove of postcards includes depictions the town throughout the decades (since the early 1900s)\, with many historical images of each of Falmouth’s villages. The postcards capture the spirit of the past and bring the people who wrote them alive again\, with all their unique personalities\, quirks\, and humor. \nEach card has its own story\, and this project enabled local literary and visual artists to use those stories to reflect on and sometimes reinterpret the postcards’ images and messages as a way to enter Falmouth’s history—to capture the contrast between past and present\, and to celebrate the unchanging character of the town. In this special lecture given by Falmouth resident Michael McNaught come hear fascinating stories about the soldiers and the memorials erected in their honor. SUMMARY:Art After Hours: The History of Wallpaper
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 14 at 4pm \nThis event is now free and open to the public in memory of Grace Hauser. Includes appetizers and wine. Limited capacity\, please pre-register. \nJoin wallpaper specialist Robert M. Kelly as he delves into the fascinating world of historic wallpapers. Special emphasis will be given to the wallpaper located in the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House. This French wallpaper dates to c. 1800. Captain Nathaniel Eldred imported it for his West Falmouth house. It depicts 18th century France with classical statuary\, buildings\, and a Chinese bridge. The paper is rare and can only be found in two other museums including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and the Smithsonian. The source of the design is a series of prints from Philibert-Louis Debucourt’s “A Day in Paris at the End of the 18th Century and Beginning of the 19th Century.” A later owner of Captain Nathaniel Eldred’s home\, Mrs. Carleton Bourne in 1948\, donated it to the historical society. William Young from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, painstakingly installed it. DESCRIPTION:Peter Cottontail Hop \nThursday\, August 24th 10am to 11:30am \nJoin the Falmouth Historical Society and the Thornton Burgess Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen for a family program that brings Burgess’ famed character Peter Cottontail to life. Sandwich native\, famed naturalist and children’s book author Thornton W. Burgess (1874-1965) created a fictional world of animal friends\, advocating respect for nature and wildlife in over 170 publications. The Conant Family who lived in the headquarters of the Falmouth Historical Society were relatives of Burgess’ friend Alice Cook. Cook is the star of Burgess’ 1955 book Aunt Sally’s Friends in Fur\, inspired by her devotion to caring for local wildlife. \nThe program will begin with a story time with Christie Lowrance author of Nature’s Ambassador: The Legacy of Thornton W. Burgess. Following the story time children will receive a bunny finger puppet and participate in a bunny dance\, and then create a take home bunny mask. The program will end with a Peter Cottontail Scavenger hunt on the grounds of the Falmouth Historical Society\, a setting filled with several gardens and home for many adorable cottontail rabbits. \n$20 per child includes puppet and take home craft. DESCRIPTION:Outcasts: the Penikese Island Leper Hospital 1904-1921 \nA partnership program with the Falmouth Jewish Congregation and the Falmouth Museums on the Green \nJuly 24 at 5pm \nFree and Open to the Public. Space limited\, reservations required. \nJoin acclaimed author and poet Eve Rifkah for a performance based on her book Outcasts: the Penikese Island Leper Hospital 1904-1921. Ms. Rifkah will read poetry from this moving collection based on the lives of inhabitants of the Penikese Island leper hospital on Penikese Island\, the smallest of the Elizabeth Islands off Cape Cod. \nAll the persona poems are based on actual patients and the directors of the hospital and actual patients\, who came from around the world [China\, Japan\, The Azores\, Russia\, Turkey\, Greece\, Latvia\, India\, Cape Verde\, Trinidad\, Barbados\, Syria\, Italy and the US]\, but were living in the Boston area at the time they were diagnosed with leprosy. They were Christian\, Buddhist\, Jewish\, Muslim. 36 patients were sent to the island\, 14 are buried there and 13 were sent to the newly built national leprosarium in Carville\, Louisiana when the Penikese leper hospital closed in 1921. Leprosy\, today called Hansen’s disease\, is a term of fear. We refer to feeling like a leper when we mean to feel like an outsider. While most Americans have never seen\, a person with Hansen’s disease that they know of it still instills an abhorrent sense of revulsion. \nEve Rifkah was co-founder of Poetry Oasis\, Inc. (1998-2012)\, a non-profit poetry association dedicated to education and promoting local poets. Founder\, and Editor DINER\, a literary magazine with a 7-year run. She is the 2021 recipient of the Stanley Kunitz award. She has run an ongoing writing workshop for 15 years and teaches workshops and classes at WISE (Worcester Institute for Senior Education). She lives in Worcester\, MA with her husband\, musician\, artist\, writer Michael Milligan and their cat. \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Historical Society is thrilled to present a new exciting Art & Wellness Stretch and Sketch Series. The programs start with a short 20-minute art talk given by the Society’s Director\, American art historian\, Rachel Lovett\, about different paintings in our collection followed by a 45 minute yoga session in the beautiful garden paired with the theme of the painting talk. \nAmy Littlefield will lead a yoga and meditation class\, accessible for all levels. The practice will help students relax and be present. A time to listen to our mind\, body and all senses. Creating space to take in the surroundings then tap into our creativity. DESCRIPTION:Arts Alive Weekend at The Falmouth Museums on the Green (Falmouth Historical Society)\nSaturday\, June 17th\n10am to 2pm\n\nThe Falmouth Museums on the Green (Falmouth Historical Society) will offer free Guided House Tours & a Walking Tour (10:30am) on Saturday June 17th from 10am to 2pm\, with tours leaving every half hour (last tour at 1:30pm). The tours will feature the historic c. 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House. The tour travels through time from 1790-1960 to hear about different periods of the house’s history. Self guided galleries will be open at the Conant House along with the Cultural Center which features a new exhibition\, Sales by the Sea: Historic Falmouth Businesses. This event is in collaboration with the Arts Alive 2023 Weekend Celebration. Tours are limited to 10 per group. Families are invited to participate in our free Town Green Scavenger Hunt which can be picked up from the gift shop in the visitors center.\n\nArtsFalmouth will hold Arts Alive 2023 the weekend of June 16\, 17\, and 18 on the Falmouth Library Lawn. DESCRIPTION:Cooking with Margaret Conant \nThursday\, June 15 2023 at 5:30pm\, Falmouth Museums on the Green \nStep back more than one hundred years into Margaret Conant’s kitchen\, a room that would have been the heart of the historic Conant house\, now owned by the Falmouth Historical Society located on Falmouth’s Village Green. In the 1920s\, Margaret and her husband William ran a boarding house on the premises; this was a perfect fit for Margaret because she was a graduate of the legendary Boston Cooking School (famous for Fannie Merritt Farmer who was a fellow classmate). Margaret used her culinary expertise to serve as a chef in dining establishments in Woods Hole and as a personal chef to private families. This presentation includes the history of the founding of the Boston Cooking School\, an exploration of many foods Margaret made for her family\, and demystifies the components and flow of high-society dinners Margaret would have been expected to produce for her clients. \nFood Historian Joyce White will give the program. Joyce is also an independent consultant to historic museums and offers PowerPoint presentations on a variety of topics\, writes articles for local publications such as Outlook by the Bay\, MarylandRoadTrips.com\, Chesapeake Family Magazine\, and assorted blogs\, and is now creating historically accurate faux food items of use at historic sites. Joyce has a B.A. from William Smith College\, an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State University\, and has studied food history with leaders in the field at various historic sites in England and the US. Joyce has been featured on television shows several times: State Plate with Taylor Hicks\, Eatin’ the Chesapeake for MPT\, and CBS News Sunday Morning.
