DESCRIPTION:Author Christie Palmer Lowrance will present a talk on: “Thornton W. Burgess: An Extraordinary Naturalist\, Children’s Author\, and Cape Codder”\nWednesday\, April 10th at 2pm \n“In the realm of wildlife conservation and natural history\, there is one name in the United States that must not be forgotten: Thornton W. Burgess\,” wrote Dr. Theodore H. Reed\, Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park director.   \nFrom a Cape Cod childhood to work as a journalist\, then a beloved children’s author and wildlife advocate in Springfield and Hampden\,  Massachusetts\, Thornton Burgess’ career as an internationally loved story-teller\, a respected naturalist\, and pioneer in environmental education and radio programming for children was ground-breaking. Christie Palmer Lowrance\, author of Nature’s Ambassador: The Legacy of Thornton W. Burgess\, will describe highlights of his career\, including his great friendship with “animal whisperer” Alice Conant Cook\, whose Conant relatives lived in the headquarters of Falmouth Historical Society. Ms. Lowrance will read excerpts from Aunt Sally’s Friends in Fur\, his fond literary tribute to Cook\, as well as show slides of her famous Woodshed Night Club.” \nTalk is free thanks to the generosity of the Ellis Family in memory of Robert Conant Ellis (1931-2023) and Susan Yeager Tow (1936-2019)\, grandson and granddaughter of William and Margaret Conant. \nBIO \nChristie Palmer Lowrance has passionately pursued a lifelong career as a writer/editor\, journalist\, biographer\, and writing instructor. She has written extensively about Cape Cod’s historical\, artistic\, literary\, and commercial life\, and taught writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Cape Cod Community College. Ms. Lowrance is the author of Nature’s Ambassador: The Legacy of Thornton W. Burgess published by Schiffer Publishing. Her children’s book The Last Heath Hen\, illustrated by artist Mike Berndt\, will be released early this summer. A biography\, Ships and Shards\, on Dr. George F. Bass\, known as the father of underwater archaeology\, is a work-in-progress. \nMs. Lowrance has a B.A. from William Smith College and an M.A. from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. DESCRIPTION:Historical Postcards: The Stories They Tell; The Art They Inspire \nWednesday\, April 3rd at 1pm \nFalmouth Historical Society’s Cultural Center 55 Palmer Avenue Falmouth\, MA 02540 \nFree and Open to the Public Thanks to the Falmouth Cultural Council \nThe Falmouth Public Library’s trove of postcards includes depictions of the town throughout the decades (since the early 1900s)\, with many historical images of each of Falmouth’s villages. Anna Lee\, Technical Services Assistant at the Falmouth Public Library and Alice Kociemba\, Founding Director of Calliope Poetry will give a gallery talk on Wednesday\, April 3rd at 1:00 p.m. in the Cultural Center of Falmouth Museums on the Green.  Anna will explore how each of the postcards tells its own story. Alice will focus on how the postcard’s images and messages have inspired local writers and artists to create new art. \nCalliope Poetry’s Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past received a 2023 grant from the Falmouth Cultural Council\, the local agency of the Mass Cultural Council \n Feel free to bring a lunch to enjoy in the Society’s beautiful gardens before or after the talk.\n\n \nBios:\n\nAlice Kociemba is the founding director of Calliope Poetry and is the author of the poetry collection\, Bourne Bridge. Along with Robin Smith-Johnson and Rich Youmans\, Alice is a co-editor of From the Farther Shore: Discovering Cape Cod and the Islands through Poetry. Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past is Calliope’s latest project. \n\n \nAnna Lee is a Technical Services Assistant at Falmouth Public Library. Eleanor and Reginald are two of the bunnies who live at the Museums. They have lots of favorite spots they visit every day. Children will use pictures to guide them to different bunny landmarks. The program will end with an easter egg hunt on the grounds of the Falmouth Historical Society. Find out how Coman influenced Bates in the writing of her signature piece\, “America the Beautiful.” \n– Learn about Capt. William Bodfish and his wife Mary\, and why they hold the unofficial world record for the shortest honeymoon ever. \n– Finally\, you’ll hear a few tales of love gone wrong—about a minister who had a stalker\, and a rich bachelor who was jilted in public. \nTake a break during these blustery days of early spring and learn the secrets of Falmouth’s bygone lovers. \nPlease pre-register as capacity is limited. Women also had their assigned place and role in the household determined for the “fair sex” by custom and laws. \nBut questions arise. Circumstances change. Children are born. Deaths occur. A father\, brother or husband might not be available when a woman must make decisions. How imperative was it to have male supervision or accompaniment in business matters? \nJoin Tamsen George in peering into the eighteenth-century world of women. We recite\, “A man’s work is sun to sun\, a woman’s work is never done. . .” but is that true? \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Members; or donation based ticket. Light refreshments served \nTamsen George’s book will also be for sale during the event – Allegiance: The Life and Times of William Eustis\, published in 2022\, has an international award in US history. It celebrates a relatively unknown doctor who knew all the standard and limited list of “founders.” Without him and others in that second row capacity\, they could not have managed our revolution and solution as well as they did. DESCRIPTION:Winter Walk: In Search of the Captain’s Best Mate\n\n\n\n\nIn this walking tour\, discover the homes of sea captains and their families\, including many featured in our exhibition. \nSaturday\, February 17th at 1 pm \nHow far would you go to be close to a loved one? \nDuring the whaling era\, eleven Falmouth couples confronted that question\, and responded\, “To the ends of the earth.” \nIn this walking tour\, you’ll discover the hidden history of local whaling families.  Learn about sea captains who brought their wives and toddlers on voyages around the world that lasted up to five years.  Find out about babies born in New Zealand\, Hawaii\, and St. Helena – or on the open seas. \nYour tour guide will be John Bissonnette\, a descendant of Falmouth’s famed Lawrence family.  Five Lawrence brothers went whaling in the early 19th century\, and three of them – Thomas\, Lewis\, and Samuel — brought wives with them.  John will show you houses where local whaling families  lived when not at sea\, as well as other landmarks of the whaling industry.  Along the way\, you’ll learn a lot about life aboard ship for wives and children\, and you’ll grow in admiration for these women who defied convention and refused to stay at home. \nThe Museums’ exhibition “Better Together:  Falmouth Families at Sea” will be open to walkers for a half hour before and after the walking tour. \n$20 Non Members/$ 5 Members. DESCRIPTION:Winter Walk: In Search of the Captain’s Best Mate\n\n\n\n\nIn this walking tour\, discover the homes of sea captains and their families\, including many featured in our exhibition. \nSaturday\, February 10th at 1 pm \nHow far would you go to be close to a loved one? \nDuring the whaling era\, eleven Falmouth couples confronted that question\, and responded\, “To the ends of the earth.” \nIn this walking tour\, you’ll discover the hidden history of local whaling families.  Learn about sea captains who brought their wives and toddlers on voyages around the world that lasted up to five years.  Find out about babies born in New Zealand\, Hawaii\, and St. Helena – or on the open seas. \nYour tour guide will be John Bissonnette\, a descendant of Falmouth’s famed Lawrence family.  Five Lawrence brothers went whaling in the early 19th century\, and three of them – Thomas\, Lewis\, and Samuel — brought wives with them.  John will show you houses where local whaling families  lived when not at sea\, as well as other landmarks of the whaling industry.  Along the way\, you’ll learn a lot about life aboard ship for wives and children\, and you’ll grow in admiration for these women who defied convention and refused to stay at home. \nThe Museums’ exhibition “Better Together:  Falmouth Families at Sea” will be open to walkers for a half hour before and after the walking tour. \n$20 Non Members/$ 5 Members. This resilience of old growth wood continues to stand the test of time leaving many houses on Cape Cod built 200+ years ago still in functional condition.  Today’s new fast growth wood does not. Their rings are much wider apart making this material subject to rot and insect damage.  This reality is putting new builds at risk\, making their useful life as short as 25 years or less.  With the trend toward demolition and new builds continuing\, what will the Cape look like in 30 plus years? \nAnd there’s more… watch and see why restoration is the greener path. There were many similarities in to Austen’s England here in Falmouth from social graces\, room usage\, and architecture. This exciting virtual talk will focus on food history of the period. \nWhat’s a rout cake? Does Mr. Woodhouse like any food at all? What might Lady Catherine serve for dinner to her exalted guests? Fans of Jane Austen’s novels will appreciate this look into the dining styles of late 18th and early 19th century England. References to the novels will accompany this presentation of the dining styles of England’s late Georgian and Regency eras. \n$10 per person/$5 Members. We cover the big stories\, visits to Washburn by Gen. Patton and Heavy Weight\, Champ Joe Louis. There are small stories\, like kids combing the shoreline for discarded Army foil packets of instant coffee\, which their mothers craved because of rationing and lonely soldiers being ordered to release chipmunks they had captured and tried to make pets out of! Join us and you will learn something guaranteed! The lecture is a joint fundraiser for the Falmouth Museum on the Green and the Cape Cod Military Museum.\n\n\nJoe Yukna Bio: \nMy interest in the Military history of the Cape started when I worked as a Department of Defense Police Officer on Camp Edwards/Otis ANGB in the late 1980’s. Driving around the base and seeing all the abandoned buildings made me wonder what went on here. I put out a call to get a museum going on Cape Cod.  Jerry Ellis answered that call. We had secured two barracks and six surrounding acres on Camp Edwards then an open base. September 11th ended that phase of the Military Museum.  After a hiatus we have been working on getting a venue to tell our amazing story. We have been collecting artifacts\, and information on military activities here on the Cape and the overseas activities of units that trained here. We have helped out various historical societies with military displays. We offer a series of photo lectures to educate the public and promote the museum. After leaving the D.O.D. SUMMARY:The Bells of Falmouth
DESCRIPTION:Our meeting in November will feature a talk by Mr. Kenneth Peal\, a retired engineer\, who has been exploring bells in Falmouth for many years. He will tell us about some of Falmouth’s bells and the gems of history that they bring. They include church bells\, school bells\, fire bells and even a bell that was saved from a WHOI research ship before it went to the scrap yard. He will introduce us to how bells work\, how they are made and the many ways they can be rung. He will describe some newly discovered bells in town\, historic bells he found that were previously not recorded by people who keep track of such things\, a couple of mysteries and even a bell controversy. The talk will end in a nod to the season with a Christmas bell story. \n$20 Non-members/$10Members. Includes appetizers and wine. Limited capacity\, please register online. \nMr. Peal was born and educated in Canada and emigrated with his young family to Falmouth in 1971 to take a job as an electrical engineer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During many years at WHOI\, his work changed from the early days of learning how to use room-sized computers at sea to designing and deploying underwater instruments that often have several computers inside a small pressure case. His travels to test and deploy these instruments took him on ships to most of the world’s oceans and to the high artic where he lived in ice camps for several weeks at a time. \nNow retired\, he volunteers around town and actively follows his interest in things historic and environmental. One of his hobbies is “fixing things that were never meant to be fixed” to fight against the throwaway society. \nHe lives with his wife\, Michele\, in a 160-year old house in West Falmouth which he happily opens to his children and grandchildren especially during the summer. \nRegister Here\n\n
