DESCRIPTION:Historical Walking Tours of the 2025 season \nThe “Depot Ave Walking Tour” on Tuesdays\, at 10:30am\, leaving from the Hallett Barn Visitors Center (please arrive 15 minutes ahead of time). \nFalmouth’s maritime past is proudly remembered\, but there’s more to the history of our town.  When the railroad arrived in 1871\, Falmouth’s link to the world shifted from the sea to the rails.  Trains brought visitors and freight to town multiple times daily.  A bustling commercial zone arose\, centered around the hub of the train station on Depot Ave.  Join us as we explore this aspect of Falmouth’s industrial past and how it led to discussions over zoning and development that we live with today.  Along the way\, you’ll also see lovely examples of late 19th and early 20th century homes built by Cape Codders who gave up seafaring and prospered in professions like insurance\, hospitality\, and retail. \nView our Historical Walking Tour page for more information.

Library of Congress.\n  \n\nFrom Armenia to Falmouth: The Incredible Story of Moses Gulesian & How He Helped Save the USS Constitution\nTuesday\, October 8\, 2024\, 4 pm \nIn December 1905\, Boston businessman and Falmouth resident Moses Gulesian made a startling offer to buy USS Constitution from the Navy for $10\,000. The Armenian immigrant who had made his fortune in America in the metalworking business was moved to action by the news that the Navy wanted to use Constitution for target practice. His patriotic effort to save the ship by buying it spurred a national petition drive that embarrassed the government into taking action. Come hear the story of how Moses Gulesian made it possible for people to still walk the decks of “Old Ironsides” today. \nCarl Herzog is the Public Historian for the USS Constitution Museum\, and lives in Falmouth. He holds a PhD in history from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst\, where he studied colonial maritime smuggling between New England and the Caribbean. DESCRIPTION:Becoming Cape Cod: Creating a Seaside Resort \nJim O’Connell’s talk on “Becoming Cape Cod: The Creation of a Seaside Resort” is based on his book about the history of Cape Cod’s development as a vacation mecca. The presentation\, which is illustrated with his collection of rare historic postcards\, traces Cape Cod’s resort history from its discovery by Henry David Thoreau before the Civil War to the present day. The talk covers three eras: 1870-1920\, on the early years of the resort; 1920-1950\, on the impact of the automobile on creating a tourist region with common marketing\, a plethora of attractions\, and a strong heritage appeal; 1950-present\, on measures taken to preserve the Cape in the face of over-development. \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Members\, or donation based ticket. His books include Becoming Cape Cod: Creating a Seaside Resort\, Dining Out in Boston: A Culinary History\, and The Hub’s Metropolis: Boston’s Suburban Development\, From Railroad Suburbs to Smart Growth. He is currently writing a book about how Boston has become a global city. He formerly lived in Yarmouthport and currently lives in Newton with his wife Ann Marie.

SUMMARY:Waquoit Bay & The Vínland Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Waquoit Bay & The Vínland Mystery \nFor over 175 years researchers have attempted to unravel the information in two Icelandic Sagas\, – the Greenlander’s Saga and the Saga of Eric the Red\, – with the goal of locating ‘Vínland’\, an area on the North American Atlantic coast where grapes grew wild\, winters were mild\, and Native Americans already occupied the land.  Without doubt the single most important development in the long search for Vinland was the discovery of a 11th century European settlement just outside the Newfoundland fishing village of L’Anse aux Meadows.  Found in 1960 by Norwegian writer/adventurer Helge Ingstad\, [1899-2001] and excavated by his wife\, archeologist Anne Stein Ingstad [1918-1997] this site has however never been fully accepted as the answer to the Vinland mystery.  Most all researchers continue to look for Vinland farther south.  Southern New England\, and in particular Massachusetts and Cape Cod has long been believed to be the area that best matches the picture of Vínland. \nSpeaker Neil Good was highly skeptical when he first became interested in researching the Vinland mystery in 1981.  Forty-three years later he now believes another Norwegian writer/researcher\, Johannes Kr. Tornoe\, [1891-1970] may have been correct when he proposed in 1965 that Waquoit Bay in East Falmouth was the true location of Leif Eriksson’s Vínland settlement.  All are invited to the April presentation where they will be able to weigh the evidence for themselves. \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Museums on the Green Members\, or donation based ticket. This special presentation on a lesser-known topic will feature highlighted events and people from the period 1761 (end of the French and Indian Wars) to 1783 (the Treaty of Paris) as they unfolded on and involved people of the Cape and islands.  Included also will be details on the Battle of Falmouth of April 1779.  David Martin\, Editor of a new book\, “The Cape and Islands in the American Revolution—The Antecedents\, the Rebellion\, and the Conflict”\, will provide the presentation\, and the book will also be available for purchase. \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Museums on the Green Members\, or donation based ticket. Venture with us into the quaint village of\nNorth Falmouth\, shaped by the numerous Nye family from 1699 until the mid-20th century.\nWe’ll take in the Congregational Church and its cemetery\, then walk along Old Main Road\,\nappreciating the beauty of its historic homes and sharing stories of their inhabitants. We’ll meet\nprogenitor Benjamin Nye\, tragic whaling captain John Galen Nye\, shopkeeper Ferdinand Nye\,\nand many more. Other residents\, not of the Nye clan\, also fell under North Falmouth’s spell—a\ndiverse group that includes Senator Daniel Webster\, stonemason Manuel Brazil\, and hatmakers\nSusan and Cora Small. DESCRIPTION:We will be holding a members reception for the opening of our newest exhibition on June 5th. The exhibition will open to the public  on Friday\, June 6\, 2025\, at the Falmouth Museums on the Green\, Resistance & Resilience: The Road to the American Revolution in Falmouth\, Massachusetts invites visitors to explore the local history of Falmouth during the Revolutionary War through an interactive experience. The exhibition takes a unique approach by presenting the story through the diverse perspectives of different groups in Falmouth during the period\, including Quakers\, Wampanoags\, African Americans\, women\, and men\, revealing the multifaceted impact of the Revolution on the town and its residents. \nWith 30 objects from the museum’s permanent collection\, the exhibition dives into the everyday lives and struggles of Falmouth’s inhabitants during the years leading up to and during the American Revolution. Visitors can engage with artifacts that reveal the town’s role in coastal defense\, its commitment to colonial resistance\, the freedom struggles of enslaved African Americans\, and the evolving roles of women and indigenous people during wartime. These distinct experiences are brought to life\, giving a deeper understanding of Falmouth’s contribution to the larger colonial effort for independence. \nFalmouth\, a town situated on Cape Cod\, was an active participant in the Revolutionary struggle\, from forming local committees in 1774 to preparing for conflict in 1775. The town’s residents\, both men and women\, navigated the challenges of war\, military service\, and shifting political allegiances. Resistance & Resilience sheds light on the early acts of defiance and the trials of everyday life that helped shape Falmouth’s resistance to British rule and its resilience in the face of war. \nThe exhibition opens on June 6th\, 2025\, with a special members-only reception on June 5th from 4 pm to 6 pm\, remarks at 5:15pm. SUMMARY:Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod\, June 11\, 2025 at 4pm \nFrom the era of the Puritans right through to the end of the Revolutionary War\, Boston was a central hub for the slave trade. Slaves were brought on board ships from the African coast with regularity\, often mastered by Cape Cod Sea captains. The number of slaves per household was much smaller in the Northeast as compared to the South\, yet nonetheless\, a much-needed labor force was desired\, reaching its zenith when our nation first officially started. \nAfter Massachusetts legally prohibited its practice in 1780\, sea captains became engaged in a variety of ways within its continuance. There were some captains who brought them in surreptitiously\, while others enhanced the slave market in other indirect ways. Polarizing lines were drawn up. The commonwealth’s maritime industry became quite divided with some fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains wished only to witness a very slow demise of this profitable endeavor. \nThe book discusses religious views\, political platforms\, economic factors\, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period. We gain an insight into the thinking of the day.
