SUMMARY:HYBRID TALK: "They Call Me Pathfinder" with Mark Epstein
DESCRIPTION:THEY CALL ME PATHFINDER\nThe True Story of One Man’s Mission to Improve Education in South Carolina\nMark Epstein’s father started calling him “Pathfinder” when he was 10 years old.  The unusual nickname came from the Pathfinder sleeping bags he sold in his Charlie’s Surplus sporting goods store in Worcester. It took Mark a while to grow into the moniker.  As a kid\, he had dreams of playing basketball\, but his lack of motivation sidelined him. Later\, a divorce sent him south to Charleston\, SC\, without a plan. While struggling to put his life back together\, he found his path as an educator\, school counselor\, basketball coach and advocate for equality. He also helped the students he coached find meaning in life and change for the better. While he has befriended some of the greatest athletes in history\, the students and parents he met in the public school system  have been the celebrities in his life. If you don’t believe one person can make a difference.  It’s time to read this book. \nThis is the Museums’ first hybrid talk.  Come join us in person at the Cultural Center or log in virtually through Zoom. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nTHIS EVENT IF FREE AND OPEN TO ALL \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Madhouse at the End of the Earth" with Julian Sancton
DESCRIPTION:MADHOUSE AT THE END OF THE EARTH\nThe Belgica’s Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night\nIn 1897\, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail on a three-year expedition to the icy continent of Antarctica\, the unchartered end of the earth. After a series of costly setbacks\, he had two options: turn back in defeat or sail deeper into the freezing waters toward glory—the first expedition to reach the magnetic South Pole.  De Gerlache chose glory. Soon\, the ship was stuck fast in the icy hold of the Bellingshausen Sea. And when the sun set on the magnificent polar landscape one last time\, its occupants were condemned to harsh\, endless nights. For months\, they were besieged by monotony and plagued by a mysterious illness.  Amid the darkness\, they descended into madness. Two young officers are at the heart of this epic tale of survival. Dr. Frederick Cook\,half genius/half con man and the lone American on the expedition. And Roald Amundsen\, the ship’s first mate.  Together\, they planned a last-ditch\, nearly-certain-to-fail escape from the ice. \n  \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Gun\, The Ship and the Pen" with Linda Colley
DESCRIPTION:THE GUN\, THE SHIP\, AND THE PEN\nWarfare\, Constitutions\, and the Making of the Modern World\nThe United States Constitution was written in 1787.  The first three words are “we the people.”  But we are not the first or the only people to create a written governing document. Corsica can claim its pioneering constitution of 1755. The tiny Pitcairn Island in the Pacific was the first place on the globe to permanently enfranchise women. And decades before our Founding Fathers framed the American constitution\, unexpected players\, such as Catherine the Great of Russia\, experimented with constitutional techniques with her enlightened Nakaz. The Gun\, the Ship\, and the Pen traces the global history of these famous and sometimes marginalized documents from the 1750s to the twentieth century and the colorful characters who helped create them. She also uncovers the close connections they have to the war and the rise of empires and nations. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Holly" with Julian Rubenstein
DESCRIPTION:THE HOLLY\nFive Bullets\, One Gun\, and the Struggle to Save an American Neighborhood\nIt was the last evening of summer in 2013.  Five shots rang out in the Holly\, a part of northeast Denver. African American families fleeing the Jim Crow South had settled in this area\, which\, over time\, become the “invisible city” within a historically white metropolis.  Shootings weren’t uncommon in the Holly.  But the identity of the shooter that night came as a total shock.  Terrance Roberts was a revered anti-gang activist.  He worked to bring peace\, not violence\, to his community. So why had he just fired a gun? Award-winning\, Denver-based journalist Julian Rubinstein reconstructs the events that left a local gang member paralyzed and Roberts facing the possibility of life in prison. But The Holly is much more than a crime story.  It’s a multigenerational saga of race and politics that runs from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. Its cast includes billionaires\, elected officials\, cops\, developers\, and street kids. It explores the porous boundaries between a city’s elites and its most disadvantaged citizens. It also probes the fraught relationships between police\, confidential informants\, activists\, gang members\, and ex–gang members as they struggle to put their pasts behind them. When Roberts goes on trial\, the city’s fault lines are fully exposed. To put it bluntly\, there’s a lot at stake. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENT BRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Free World" with Louis Menand
DESCRIPTION:THE FREE WORLD\nArt and Thought in the Cold War\nWith Pulitzer Prize Winning Scholar and Critic Louis Menand\nThe Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was a contest of ideas: economic\, political\, artistic\, and personal. With the wit and insight familiar to readers of The Metaphysical Club and his New Yorker essays\, Menand takes us inside Hannah Arendt’s Manhattan\, the Paris of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir\, Merce Cunningham and John Cage’s residencies at North Carolina’s Black Mountain College\, and the Memphis studio where Sam Phillips and Elvis Presley created a new music for the American teenager. He examines the post war vogue for French existentialism\, structuralism and post-structuralism\, the rise of abstract expressionism and pop art\, Allen Ginsberg’s friendship with Lionel Trilling\, James Baldwin’s transformation into a Civil Right spokesman\, Susan Sontag’s challenges to the New York Intellectuals\, the defeat of obscenity laws\, and the rise of the New Hollywood.  Menand shows how the changing economic\, technological\, and social forces from the end of  World War II to Vietnam changed American culture forever. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Victory for the Vote" with Doris Weatherford:
DESCRIPTION:VICTORY FOR THE VOTE\nThe Fight for Women’s Suffrage and the Century that Followed\nNancy Pelosi’s forward to Victory for the Vote reminds us “that the trailblazing suffragists did not wait for change\, they worked for change!”  And work they did! Women’s history expert Doris Weatherford starts with a detailed history of the women’s suffrage movement–from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Then she puts the fight for the right to vote into a contemporary context by highlighting the revolutionary women whose activism changed our world in the decades following the passage of the suffrage amendment and discussing key challenges for women since 1920\, such as reproductive rights\, the Equal Rights Amendment\, and expanding political power. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Valcour: The 1776 Campaign that Saved the Cause of Liberty" with Jack Kelly
DESCRIPTION:VALCOUR\nThe 1776 Campaign that Saved The Cause of Liberty\nRemember when America’s scrappy navy took on the full might of Britain’s sea power? Probably not. It was the least known campaign of the Revolutionary War.  It was also one of the most crucial.  During the summer of 1776\, a British attack from Canada loomed. Three men led the Northern Campaign: the underrated general Philip Schuyler; the ambitious former British officer Horatio Gates; and the now notorious Benedict Arnold. That’s right—Benedict Arnold. The experienced sea captain devised a bold and brilliant strategy to defend the newly independent nation he later betrayed.  The Patriots constructed a small fleet of gunboats on Lake Champlain in northern New York and confronted the Royal Navy in a desperate three-day battle near Valcour Island. Their brazen efforts surprised the arrogant British and forced them to call off their invasion. The cause of liberty was saved. As they say\, the rest is history. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Last Mona Lisa" with Jonathan Santlofer
DESCRIPTION:THE LAST MONA LISA: A NOVEL\nIn August of 1911\, Vincent Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. Exactly what happened in the two years before its recovery is a mystery. Many replicas of the famous painting exist\, and more than one historian has wondered if the one returned to the Louvre is a fake. Now\, present-day art professor Luke Perrone digs for the truth behind his most famous ancestor—you guessed it–Peruggia. His search attracts an Interpol detective with something to prove and an unfamiliar but curiously helpful woman. Soon\, Luke tumbles deep into the underbelly of the art world and forgery\, a land of obsession and danger.  Oh what a web Jonathan Santlofer weaves in his newest novel: cunning characters\, plots twists and unstoppable suspense.  But what else would you suspect from this writer and artist? His debut novel\, “The Death Artist” was a bestseller and is currently in development at Fox. His fourth novel\, “Anatomy of Fear” won the Nero Award for best crime novel of 2009. And\, as an artist\, he knows firsthand why people want to acquire priceless works of art. He has been making replications of famous paintings for wealthy clients for more than 20 years. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Love Proof" with Madeleine Henry
DESCRIPTION:THE LOVE PROOF: A NOVEL\nThe New York Times named it a New and Noteworthy book.  Critics are calling it “smart\, sexy and scientific” “whip-smart and undeniably unique” and “worth every minute spent reading it.”  The premise is simple. Sophie Jones is a physics prodigy on track to unlock the secrets of the universe. During her first week at Yale\, she meets Jake Kristopher\, a scholarship student who worked very hard to get there. While they couldn’t be more different\, they are instantly drawn together. But this is not your typical “girl-meets-guy-girl-loses-guy” love story. It’s about perfect love and imperfect people.  It’s about ambition and sacrifice. It’s about unexpected change and heartbreaking loss. It’s about time and lasting connection.  It’s simply refreshing. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Tecumseh and The Prophet" with Peter Cozzens
DESCRIPTION:TECUMSEH AND THE PROPHET\nThe Heroic Struggle for America’s Heartland\nWhen settlers spilled across the Appalachians to exploit lands won from the British in the War of Independence\, they disregarded on thing:  the rightful owners of the land. This is the untold story of the two Shawnee brothers who retaliated against the threat. Tecumseh was a brilliant diplomat and leader—admired by the same white Americans he opposed.  Tenskwatawa\, called the “Shawnee Prophet\,” created a vital doctrine of religious and cultural revitalization that unified the disparate tribes of the old Northwest.  Until the Americans killed Tecumseh in 1813\, the brothers were the co-architects of the broadest pan-Indian confederation in United States history. Through detailed research of Native American society and customs\, award-winning historian Peter Cozzens reveals how both men came to power in different\, but no less important\, ways and provides a window into a world often erased from history books. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Girls Who Stepped Out of Line" with Mari K. Eder
DESCRIPTION:THE GIRLS WHO STEPPED OUT OF LINE\nUntold Stories of the Women Who Changed the Course of World War II\nGena Turgel was a prisoner who worked in the hospital at Bergen-Belsen.  There\, she cared for the young Anne Frank who was dying of typhus. Sisters Ida and Louis Cook sponsored refugees\, helped smuggle their jewelry\, furs and other valuables out of occupied territories and established temporary housing for immigrant families in London. Liane B. Russell fled Austria with nothing and later become a renowned U.S. scientist.  Her research on the effects of radiation on embryos made a difference to thousands of lives. The list goes on: a world tennis champ who became a spy\, a Polish immigrant who worked for the OSS\, a Jewish refugee who became a partisan to fight the Nazis. These are the girls who stepped out of line\, the women who served\, fought\, struggled and made things happen—in and out of uniform. They were ordinary heroes who did extraordinary things. Retired U.S. Army Major General Mari K. Eder wrote this book because she knew their stories needed to be told so their legacy could embolden generations of women to come. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Fears of a Setting Sun" with Dennis Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:FEARS OF A SETTING SUN\nThe Disillusionment of America’s Founders\nFill in the blank.  By the end of their lives\, most of our founding fathers—including George Washington\, Alexander Hamilton\, John Adams\, and Thomas Jefferson—felt that America’s constitutional experiment was __________________.  The correct answer: an utter failure.  In fact\, these visionaries didn’t think the republican government they built would last beyond their own generation.  The reasons for their disillusionment and pessimism varied.  Washington lost his faith in America’s political system with the rise of partisanship. Hamilton thought the federal government was too weak; Adams believed people lacked civic virtue; and Jefferson pointed to the sectional divisions the spread of slavery exposed. Yet\, one major founder retained his faith in America’s constitutional order to the end: James Madison. This book reveals why.  It’s surprising to learn our founders harbored  deep misgivings as they faced the grave challenges of their time.  However\, at a time when Americans are worrying about the country’s future\, it’s also somewhat reassuring. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Lost Founding Father: John Quincy Adams" with William J. Cooper
DESCRIPTION:THE LOST FOUNDING FATHER\nJohn Quincy Adams and the Transformation of American Politics\nHe was overshadowed by his brilliant father\, humiliated in office after the contested election of 1824\, viciously assailed by populist opponents for being slippery and effete\, and then resoundingly defeated by the western war hero Andrew Jackson in the 1828 election which ushered in an era of unparalleled expansion. John Quincy Adams has never basked in the historical spotlight—until now. In fact\, award-winning historian William J. Cooper considers him to be our lost Founding Father. America needed his morality and political vision to guide the nation in the tumultuous years ahead. He was the final link to the other founding visionaries. Adams recovered from defeat\, became a Massachusetts congressman\, and passionately took up the antislavery cause.  Despite raucous opposition from southern and northern politicians\, he refused to relent.  His protests were so vehement that Congress enacted the gag rule in the 1830s specifically to silence him\, but that didn’t work either.  His heroic arguments in the 1841 Amistad trial have been memorialized; he stood strong against the expansion of slavery that would eventually send the nation hurtling into war until his death in 1848\, which produced an outpouring of national\, and bipartisan\, grief never seen before. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n  \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Ponzi Scheme" with David Kruh
DESCRIPTION:Charles Ponzi\, circa 1920 (Wikipedia) \nTHE PONZI SCHEME\nA Slide Show and Talk\nLong before Bernie Madoff made off with about $64.8 billion in other people’s money\, there was a guy named Ponzi. Charles Ponzi. Carlo Pietro Giovanni Guglielmo Tebaldo Ponzi (1882-1949) was born and raised in Italy. He arrived in Boston aboard the S.S. Vancouver in 1903 with a few dollars and change in his pocket. Years later\, he told the New York Times\, “I landed in this country with $2.50 in cash and $1 million in hopes\, and those hopes never left me.” Well\, Ponzi traded in those hopes for millions more.  In 1920\, he engineered one of the greatest pyramid schemes of all time\, a scheme so great they named it after him.  And he did it right here in Boston\, right under the noses of suspicious Yankees and normally inquisitive newspapermen. It cost his investors $20 million; it cost him years in federal prison. But that didn’t stop him. “I went looking for trouble and found it\,” he said right before America gave him the boot in 1934. Relive the days of Boston’s most outrageous rogue through this fascinating slide show/talk with David Kruh who has written about Boston’s erstwhile entertainment district\, Scollay Square\, and other local historical subjects. \n  \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Invention of Miracles" with Katie Booth and Brian Greenwald
DESCRIPTION:THE INVENTION OF MIRACLES\nLanguage\, Power\, and Alexander Graham Bell’s Quest to End Deafness\nWhat if your greatest invention overshadowed your life’s mission?  What if your life’s work\, though well-intentioned\, harmed those you wanted to help most?  Alexander Graham Bell’s mother was deaf; his wife\, Mabel Hubbard\, was\, too.  His goal in life was to teach deaf students to speak. In fact\, he championed “oralism” and went to considerable lengths to stamp out American Sign Language altogether. His greatest invention\, the telephone\, was the surprising outcome of his effort to create a speech reading machine. The Invention of Miracles looks at this genius in an entirely different way. It weaves together a moving love story with a dazzling tale of innovation–including the inventor’s down-to-the-wire battle with Elisha Gray to patent the telephone.  It also looks at the  damaging impact of Bell’s legacy and the deaf community’s fight to reclaim a once-forbidden language. Katie Booth has been researching this story for over fifteen years\, poring over Bell’s papers\, Library of Congress archives\, and the records of deaf schools around America. Raised in a mixed hearing/deaf family\, she’s also lived with this story her entire life. It’s given her a unique perspective on language\, power and deafness. \n\nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n\nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n\nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Kennedy's Avenger" with David Fisher
DESCRIPTION:KENNEDY’S AVENGER\nAssassination\, Conspiracy\, and the Forgotten Trial of Jack Ruby\nNo crime in history had more eyewitnesses.  It was November 24\, 1963\, two days after President Kennedy was shot.  Jack Ruby\, a troubled nightclub owner\, slipped quietly into the Dallas police station and assassinated the assassin\, Lee Harvey Oswald.  Millions of Americans witnessed the killing on live television\, yet there were still so many unanswered questions—and even more conspiracy theories. The trial that followed pitted the nation’s most flamboyant lawyer against a tough-as-Texas prosecutor.  How do you defend a man who was seen pulling the trigger? And\, more importantly\, how did Jacky Ruby die an innocent man? David Fisher unveils the astonishing details behind the first major trial of the television century and reminds us the defendant wasn’t the only one being judged.  The world was also laser-focused on the city of Dallas and the American legal system. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Mercury Rising" with Jeff Shesol
DESCRIPTION:MERCURY RISING\nJohn Glenn\, John Kennedy\, and the New Battleground of the Cold War\nIt was a perilous time\, the height of the Cold War.  The Soviets built the wall in Berlin and were testing the most destructive bombs in history.  They were also beating the United States to every major milestone in space.  If the United States couldn’t compete in the race to the heavens\, how could it compete with the Soviets on Earth? That was the question facing President John F. Kennedy. February 20\, 1962\, changed all that. When John Glenn blasted into orbit  aboard Friendship 7\, his mission was not only to circle the planet; it was to calm the fears of the free world and renew America’s sense of self-belief. Drawing on new archival sources\, personal interviews\, and previously unpublished notes by Glenn himself\, Mercury Rising reveals how the astronaut’s heroics lifted the nation’s hopes in what Kennedy called the “hour of maximum danger” and put the United States on the path to the moon. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

DESCRIPTION:DRUNK\nHow We Sipped\, Danced\, and Stumbled our Way To Civilization\nNow here’s a book worth toasting: Drunk.  Join us for an afternoon at Cape Cod Winery in East Falmouth for an entertaining and enlightening deep dive into humanity’s oldest indulgence: drinking. While plenty of books have been written about the history of alcohol and other intoxicants\, none have offered a comprehensive\, convincing answer to one basic question:  Why do humans want to get high in the first place.? What’s more\, author Edward Slingerland claims we simply would not have civilization without intoxication. Enjoy a glass of wine (and live music after the talk) as your host serves up fascinating case studies and engaging science—everything from marauding Vikings and bacchanalian orgies to sex-starved fruit flies\, blind cave fish\, and problem-solving crows. The painting includes Governor William Bradford\, Wampanoag leader Massasoit\, the English-speaking Squanto\, Priscilla Mullins (later Alden) holding Oceanus Hopkins\, and Peregrine White\, the first English child born in America. The scene depicts the mutual respect between the Native Americans and the recent arrivals at the time of the first Thanksgiving. \nThe painting was displayed at Pilgrim Hall Museum and Plimoth Plantation from 1995-2017.  It has appeared in numerous textbooks nationally and internationally.  It is currently on loan to the Museums on the Green to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim’s landing in the New World. \n  \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Ground Breaking" with Scott Ellsworth
DESCRIPTION:THE GROUND BREAKING\nAn American City and Its Search for Justice\nAnd then they were gone. More than one-thousand homes and businesses.  Restaurants\, movie theaters\, churches\, doctors’ offices\, a hospital\, a public library\, a post office.  Looted\, burned\, and bombed from the air. In the spring of 1921\, Tulsa’s infamous “Black Wall Street” was wiped off the map—and erased from the history books—in less than twenty-four hours.  Official records disappeared.  Researchers were threatened.  And the worst single incident of racial violence in American history was kept hidden for more than fifty years.  But some secrets will not die. The Ground Breaking tells the long-suppressed story of the notorious Tulsa Race Massacre: the horrific event\, the coverup\, and the courageous individuals who fought to keep the story alive. It also recounts the ongoing search for the unmarked graves of the victims and the fight to win restitution for the survivors and their families. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNON-MEMBER $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:FREE VIRTUAL TALK: "Red Comet" with Heather Clark
DESCRIPTION:RED COMET\nThe Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath \nThis highly anticipated biography of Sylvia Plath was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography. Writer Glennon Doyle called it “one of the most beautiful biographies I have ever read.”  Laura Freeman of The Times (London) said\, “I would not have wished it shorter.”  Heather Clark weaves what we know about Sylvia Plath with a wealth of never-before-accessed materials—including unpublished letters and manuscripts; court\, police\, and psychiatric records; and new interviews—to create an entirely new understanding of the poet’s world: her poetic ambition at a young age\, her early relationships and determination not to become a conventional woman and wife; her conflicted ties to her well-meaning\, widowed mother; her troubles at the hands of an unenlightened mental-health industry; and her Cambridge years and thunderclap meeting with Ted Hughes\, a marriage of true minds that would change the course of poetry in English.  Red Comet focuses on Plath’s remarkable literary and intellectual achievements\, restores the woman behind the long-held myths about her life and art\, and brings us closer than ever to the spirited woman and visionary artist who blazed a trail that still lights the way for women poets the world over. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nFREE AND OPEN TO ALL \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
