SUMMARY:Waquoit Bay & The Vínland Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Waquoit Bay & The Vínland Mystery \nFor over 175 years researchers have attempted to unravel the information in two Icelandic Sagas\, – the Greenlander’s Saga and the Saga of Eric the Red\, – with the goal of locating ‘Vínland’\, an area on the North American Atlantic coast where grapes grew wild\, winters were mild\, and Native Americans already occupied the land.  Without doubt the single most important development in the long search for Vinland was the discovery of a 11th century European settlement just outside the Newfoundland fishing village of L’Anse aux Meadows.  Found in 1960 by Norwegian writer/adventurer Helge Ingstad\, [1899-2001] and excavated by his wife\, archeologist Anne Stein Ingstad [1918-1997] this site has however never been fully accepted as the answer to the Vinland mystery.  Most all researchers continue to look for Vinland farther south.  Southern New England\, and in particular Massachusetts and Cape Cod has long been believed to be the area that best matches the picture of Vínland. \nSpeaker Neil Good was highly skeptical when he first became interested in researching the Vinland mystery in 1981.  Forty-three years later he now believes another Norwegian writer/researcher\, Johannes Kr. Tornoe\, [1891-1970] may have been correct when he proposed in 1965 that Waquoit Bay in East Falmouth was the true location of Leif Eriksson’s Vínland settlement.  All are invited to the April presentation where they will be able to weigh the evidence for themselves. \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Museums on the Green Members\, or donation based ticket. Light refreshments served. \nRegister Here\n \n————————————— \nAbout the speaker: \n\n\nNeil Good is retired following a career as a builder of replica antiques for museums and collectors.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Members Reception - Resistance & Resilience: The Road to the American Revolution in Falmouth\, Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:We will be holding a members reception for the opening of our newest exhibition on June 5th. The exhibition will open to the public  on Friday\, June 6\, 2025\, at the Falmouth Museums on the Green\, Resistance & Resilience: The Road to the American Revolution in Falmouth\, Massachusetts invites visitors to explore the local history of Falmouth during the Revolutionary War through an interactive experience. The exhibition takes a unique approach by presenting the story through the diverse perspectives of different groups in Falmouth during the period\, including Quakers\, Wampanoags\, African Americans\, women\, and men\, revealing the multifaceted impact of the Revolution on the town and its residents. \nWith 30 objects from the museum’s permanent collection\, the exhibition dives into the everyday lives and struggles of Falmouth’s inhabitants during the years leading up to and during the American Revolution. Visitors can engage with artifacts that reveal the town’s role in coastal defense\, its commitment to colonial resistance\, the freedom struggles of enslaved African Americans\, and the evolving roles of women and indigenous people during wartime. These distinct experiences are brought to life\, giving a deeper understanding of Falmouth’s contribution to the larger colonial effort for independence. \nFalmouth\, a town situated on Cape Cod\, was an active participant in the Revolutionary struggle\, from forming local committees in 1774 to preparing for conflict in 1775. The town’s residents\, both men and women\, navigated the challenges of war\, military service\, and shifting political allegiances. Resistance & Resilience sheds light on the early acts of defiance and the trials of everyday life that helped shape Falmouth’s resistance to British rule and its resilience in the face of war. \nThe exhibition opens on June 6th\, 2025\, with a special members-only reception on June 5th from 4 pm to 6 pm\, remarks at 5:15pm. A second part of the exhibition\, set to open in June 2026\, will focus on the Battle of Falmouth in 1779 and the town’s early years following the Revolution. \nFalmouth Museums on the Green\n55 Palmer Avenue\, Falmouth\, MA\nOpening June 6\, 2025\nMembers Reception: June 5\, 2025\, 4 to 6pm \nMember Only Reception\, please register in advance:\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod\, June 11\, 2025 at 4pm \nFrom the era of the Puritans right through to the end of the Revolutionary War\, Boston was a central hub for the slave trade. Slaves were brought on board ships from the African coast with regularity\, often mastered by Cape Cod Sea captains. The number of slaves per household was much smaller in the Northeast as compared to the South\, yet nonetheless\, a much-needed labor force was desired\, reaching its zenith when our nation first officially started. \nAfter Massachusetts legally prohibited its practice in 1780\, sea captains became engaged in a variety of ways within its continuance. There were some captains who brought them in surreptitiously\, while others enhanced the slave market in other indirect ways. Polarizing lines were drawn up. The commonwealth’s maritime industry became quite divided with some fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains wished only to witness a very slow demise of this profitable endeavor. \nThe book discusses religious views\, political platforms\, economic factors\, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period. We gain an insight into the thinking of the day. Sharing several profiles of notable Black slaves living in Massachusetts demonstrates the enormous contributions made to the overall growth of our country. \n$20 Non-Members/ $10 Members\, or donation based ticket. Light refreshments served. \nRegister Here\nDr. Michael Pregot\, Drmichael587@gmail.com\, author of “Sea Captains of Cape Cod” \nAvailable for book signings and special events\,  home phone 508-896-8355 \nSunbury Press\, ISBN # 978-8-88819-229-0 \n  \nThank you to our Sponsor:

Upon graduation\, he was drafted but instead enlisted in the U.S. Navy\, serving as a public information officer in the Caribbean\, Mediterranean and the Western Pacific. This included service in Danang\, Vietnam. \nAfter 3 ½ years\, he was discharged as a LT. and began a corporate career in consulting and IT management with Wells Fargo\, Transamerica and the Kendall Company. After 14 years entertaining visitors from around the world\, they moved to a condo in the Beebe Woods. \nCaroline and Jim first became acquainted with the Historical Society shortly after arriving in Falmouth. Caroline managed the gift shop in its many locations and served as president of the board. Trolley tours of Falmouth’s maritime history kept Jim busy for nearly twenty years. During the fall\, 25-30 people would ride the trolley from the Village Green to Woods Hole and back. Caroline also kept busy at the Falmouth Service Center and at the College Light Opera as treasurer on the board of directors. Meanwhile Jim was serving as treasurer of The Friends of Fairwinds\, The Penikese Island School and still as treasurer of Salt Pond  Areas Bird Sanctuaries. Jim also served on the boards of Highfield Halls & Gardens\, Neighborhood Falmouth and The Falmouth Rotary Club. \nAfter Caroline’s passing in 2021\, an internship and education program was funded at the Society. Jim continues to honor her legacy by supporting the many businesses and nonprofits that make Falmouth such a special place. He appreciates being honored with a Heritage Award and invites everyone to join him in the “Fix the Wicks” campaign. \n  \nThank you to our Sponsors! \n \n

SUMMARY:A Visit to Blackburn Conservation Studio - for 1790 Society and Fix Wicks Legacy Donors
DESCRIPTION:A Visit to Blackburn Conservation Studio\nFriday\, September 26\, 2025 | 3:00 PM\nMiddleboro\, MA \nPlease note this event is limited to 1790 Society and Fix Wicks Legacy Donors. \nStep into the world of historic preservation and artistic innovation with this special 1790 Society event with the Falmouth Historical Society at the Blackburn Conservation Studio\, the renowned workshop of third-generation wallpaper conservator Walter Eayrs. Known for his work on some of the Northeast’s most iconic historic sites—including Newport’s Gilded Age mansions and Boston’s Old South Meeting House—Eayrs most recently led the restoration of the stunning early 19th-century wallpaper at our very own Dr. Francis Wicks House. Printed in France circa 1802–1803 by Joseph Dufour\, this rare wallpaper introduced a revolutionary concept: continuous scenic landscapes in decorative interiors. The neoclassical scenes\, influenced by Versailles’ Trianon and the Chinese-style gardens of Bagatelle\, feature fashionably dressed figures of the Directoire period and set a precedent for the panoramic wallpapers that followed. \nOur visit includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the conservation studio\, a short walking tour of the idyllic Titicut Green Village\, and a sparkling reception back at the studio. The Eayrs family home\, once part of the estate of 19th-century portraitist Cephas Thompson (whose works are housed at the Met\, Boston Atheneum\, and Colonial Williamsburg)\, is now home to an impressive collection of American antiques collected by the Eayrs family. \nThis exclusive event is open only to members of the 1790 Society Members and Fix Wicks Legacy Donors and space is limited. Admission is by voluntary donation\, with proceeds supporting our Fix the Wicks Campaign to restore the c. 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House Museum. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to celebrate the artistry that helps preserve our past. RSVP required to Executive Director\, Rachel Lovett\, Rachel@museumsonthegreen.org

SUMMARY:Falmouth's Whaling Heritage
DESCRIPTION:In the early 19th century\, Falmouth remained a remote farming and fishing community. But then the growing New England whaling industry began to capture the imagination of Falmouth youth who dreamed of adventure as Cape Horn sailors searching the Pacific Ocean for whales and whale oil. Falmouth was no competition for New Bedford\, the “city that lit the world\,” but whaling and whaling-related trades became Falmouth’s principal business. Falmouth was the home port of 13 whaling ships that made 52 whaling voyages\, mainly to the Pacific\, between 1820 and 1860. Six whalers were built in Falmouth\, most of them at Bar Neck Wharf in Woods Hole\, under the oversight of the patriarch of Falmouth whaling\, Elijah Swift. With a total population of no more than 2600\, Falmouth produced an astounding 65 whaling ship captains\, some of whom took their wives on whaling voyages of three to five years and had children born at sea. In this presentation\, you will compare the Falmouth boys’ dreams of glory and adventure with the hard\, punishing realities of whaling. \n$20 Non-Members/$10 Museums on the Green Members\, or donation based ticket. Light refreshments served. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJoe Mattingly is a docent at Falmouth Museums on the Green with a special interest in the history and culture of New England and Falmouth whaling. Joe has himself recently traveled several of the whaling grounds of the Pacific and once lived for two and a half years in the Republic of the Philippines as a U. S. Air Force officer following an initial assignment at Otis AFB here on the Cape. Joe is a native son of Maryland\, a long-time docent for Historic Annapolis\, and a retired lawyer. He and his wife returned part-time to the Cape in 2011 and have lived here permanently since 2019. Knowing what he does\, Joe still has difficulty understanding why a young man who went on a four-year whaling voyage to the Pacific in the 1800s would want to go again. \n\nRegister Here
