SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Daughters of Yalta" with Catherine Grace Katz
DESCRIPTION:THE DAUGHTERS OF YALTA\nThe Churchills\, Roosevelts\, and Harrimans: A Story of Love and War\nThree edgy superpowers. One tension-filled week. The Yalta Conference in February 1945 threatened to tear the wartime alliance among Franklin Roosevelt\, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin apart—just when victory was close at hand. But there’s more to this story:  three intelligent (and very glamorous) young women were also there: Anna Roosevelt\, Sarah Churchill and Kathleen Harriman. The Daughters of Yalta. Each one was fiercely loyal and politically savvy. Each one supported her father in different ways. The president relied on Anna to keep his most damaging secrets. The Prime Minister depended on Julia\, the actress-turned-RAF officer\, for her astute political mind. And the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union\, Averell Harriman\, counted on Kathleen\, a champion skier and war correspondent\, to help manage the American delegation behind the scenes.  Their stories reveal family relationships and bring the  human experience to this momentous conference– tragedy\, love\, betrayal and even humor.  Together\, these fathers and daughters not only witnessed history\, they helped shape it. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Eagles of Heart Mountain" with Bradford Pearson
DESCRIPTION:THE EAGLES OF HEART MOUNTAIN\nA True Story of Football\, Incarceration\, and Resistance in World War II America\nIn the spring of 1942\, the United States government forced 120\,000 Japanese Americans from their homes in California\, Oregon\, Washington\, and Arizona and sent them to incarceration camps across the West. Nearly 14\,000 landed behind barbed wire fences on the outskirts of Cody\, Wyoming\, at the base of Heart Mountain. There\, they faced racism\, cruelty and frozen winters. Although they tried to recreate comforts from home–Buddhist temples\, sumo wrestling pits and Kabuki performances that drew hundreds of spectators—there was little hope.  Until the fall of 1943.  The camp’s high school football team\, the Eagles\, started its first season and finished undefeated\, crushing the competition from nearby\, predominantly white high schools. Everyone in the camps shared their victory; yet\, victory was short-lived. The federal government began drafting men from the camps for the front lines—including some of the Eagles. The young men now faced a choice: either join the Army or resist the draft. Teammates were divided; some were jailed for their decisions. During one of the darkest moments in American history\, these unlikely heroes emerged. \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Rome 1960: The Summer Olympics that Stirred the World" with David Maraniss
DESCRIPTION:ROME 1960\nThe Summer Olympics That Stirred the World\nThe 1960 Rome Olympics: 18 days of theater\, suspense\, victory and defeat. Some of the most honored athletes in Olympic history competed there: decathlete Rafer Johnson\, sprinter Wilma Rudolph\, Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila\, and Louisville boxer Cassius Clay\, who at eighteen seized the world stage for the first time\, four years before he became Muhammad Ali.  Change was everywhere.  The world as we know it was coming into view. Rome saw the first doping scandal\, the first commercially televised Summer Games and the first athlete paid for wearing a certain brand of shoes. East and West Germans competed as a unified team less than a year before the Berlin Wall. There was dispute over the two Chinas. The pressure to provide equal rights for blacks and women emerging from generations of discrimination increased. An independence movement was sweeping sub-Saharan Africa\, with fourteen nations in the process of being born. And\, in the heat of the cold war\, the city teemed with spies and rumors of defections. Every move was judged for its propaganda value. Yes\, those late-summer days at the dawn of the sixties had a much deeper meaning. The whole world was stirring with change.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "A Game of Birds and Wolves" with Simon Parkin
DESCRIPTION:A GAME OF BIRDS AND WOLVES\nThe Ingenious Young Women Whose Secret Board Game Helped Win World War II\nBy the autumn of 1941\, German U-boats were devastating the British war effort. Operating in groups known as “wolf packs” – inspired by the indigenous hunters of their homeland – they had torpedoed and sunk countless convoys packed with vital supplies. Winston Churchill knew the outcome of the war rested on the battle for the Atlantic.  What he didn’t know was his solution would evolve from a game.  Captain Gilbert Roberts and a group of ten Wrens (members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service) assigned to his team invented it. The “board” was a linoleum floor divided into painted squares. The pieces were model ships\, moving across a make-believe ocean. The object: reveal the tactics behind the vicious success of the German U-boats and develop a counter-maneuver. That counter-maneuver became “Operation Raspberry” and\, in the words of one admiral\, “contributed in no small measure to the final defeat of Germany.”  This true-life tale has it all: larger than life characters\, little known heroes\, ingenuity\, dedication\, perseverance and sacrifice.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "How to Hide an Empire" with Daniel Immerwahr
DESCRIPTION:HOW TO HIDE AN EMPIRE\nA History of the Greater United States\nThis is the story of the United States outside the United Sates. It is the expansive tale of America’s global conquests\, the actual territories this country has inhabited and governed to build an empire.  Like the Guano Islands\, where prospectors collected one of the nineteenth century’s most valuable commodities.  Like the Philippines\, the site of the most destructive event on U.S. soil.  Like Puerto Rico\, where U.S. doctors conducted grisly experiments they would have never dared on the mainland. America’s empire once extended well beyond the 50 states\, but in the years after World War II\, everything shifted.  The United States moved away from colonialism and used innovations in technology\, electronics\, transportation and culture to gain economic power and influence and redefine what empire and globalization mean today. \nNamed one of the ten best books of the year by the Chicago Tribune\nA Publishers Weekly best book of 2019 | A 2019 NPR Staff Pick \n  \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Other Madisons" with Bettye Kearse
DESCRIPTION:THE OTHER MADISONS\nThe Lost History of a President’s Black Family\nFor thousands of years\, West African griots (men) and griottes (women) have recited the stories of their people. Without this oral tradition\, Bettye Kearse would never have known she is a descendant of President James Madison and his slave\, and half-sister\, Coreen. In 1990\, Bettye became the eighth generation griotte for her family. Their credo—“Always remember—you’re a Madison. You come from African slaves and a president”—was intended to be a source of pride.  For her\, it echoed with abuses of slavery\, including rape and incest. Confronting those abuses\, Bettye embarked on a journey of discovery—of her ancestors\, the nation and herself. When she tried to confirm the information her ancestors had passed down\, she encountered obstacles at every turn. She also learned that wherever African slaves walked\, recorded history silenced their voices and buried their footsteps: beside a slave-holding fortress in Ghana; below a federal building in New York City; and under a brick walkway at James Madison’s Virginia plantation. \n“I was a pediatrician in inner-city Boston for more than thirty years. I loved it but was haunted by the intense feeling that my life’s purpose was something else…I learned that my calling is to inspire African Americans to embrace our slave ancestry and to show all Americans why we should celebrate the many global contributions made by enslaved people and their descendants.” –Bettye Kearse \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Men on Horseback" with David A. Bell
DESCRIPTION:MEN ON HORSEBACK\nThe Power of Charisma in the Age of Revolution\nGeorge Washington. Napoleon Bonaparte. Toussaint Louverture. Simon Bolivar. If the revolutionary world wanted to do without kings and queens\, who would lead?  Without divine right\, what would give leaders their authority? Military valor?  The consent of the people?  Their own Godlike qualities? These four “men on horseback” all struggled with this question. They were all idolized at the time and had great influence over others.  They also learned from each other.  In this thought-provoking survey of political charisma\, David Bell makes the case that there is\, and always has been\, a vanishingly thin line between charismatic democratic rulers and charismatic authoritarians. Corisca’s Pasquale Paoli\, an icon of republican virtue\, would influence both Washington’s America and Bonaparte’s France. In turn\, while Bonaparte exalted Washington\, he fashioned an entirely different form of leadership for himself and eventually betrayed Louverture who tried to make the French Revolutionary ideals of freedom and equality a reality for the formerly enslaved people of what would become Haiti. And\, Bolivar\, who fought to liberate Latin America from Spanish rule\, later sought refuge there. By examining the power of charisma in the age of revolution\, we can see how it can threaten democracy’s durability and appeal or be an animating force for good in politics—at any time. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Sermons in Stone: The Stone Walls of New England" with Susan Allport
DESCRIPTION:SERMONS IN STONE\nThe Stone Walls of New England & New York\nIn 1871 there were 252\,539 miles of stone walls in New England and New York―enough to circle the earth ten times. But what do we actually know about them?  Who built them–and why? Susan Allport is an award-winning writer specializing in science\, travel and food. She began thinking about these humble structures when she moved to Katonah\, NY\, and started talking walks in woods crisscrossed with walls. This illuminating history of walls begins quite by accident. During the Ice Age\, glaciers almost a mile thick scraped over the Hudson Valley carrying stones from other places and randomly depositing them here. But historical records show people—everyone from farmers\, slaves\, Indians\, indentured servants and children—have intentionally built these fascinating\, peculiar and sometimes downright eccentric structures for purposes entirely their own. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\n\nREGISTER ONLINE THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nTHIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Chicago's Great Fire" with Carl S. Smith
DESCRIPTION:CHICAGO’S GREAT FIRE\nThe Destruction and Resurrection of an Iconic American City\nAlmost 150 years ago\, most of Chicago burned to the ground.  The fire started in Catherine and Patrick O’Leary’s barn on October 8\, 1871 and grew out of control quickly by jumping branches of the Chicago River twice on its relentless northeastward path through the city’s three divisions. Why?  Chicago\, incorporated as a city in 1837\, grew at a breathtaking pace. The population was around 4\,000 in 1840; it had exploded to more than 330\,000 by the time the fire ignited. Built hastily over the years\, the city was made largely of wood.  Although the death toll was miraculously low\, close to one of every three Chicago residents was left homeless; more were instantly unemployed.  Eminent Chicago historian Carl Smith builds the story of the Chicago’s great fire around well-known and little-known characters\, including General Philip Sheridan and Robert Todd Lincoln\, and chronicles the city’s rapid growth and place in America’s post-Civil War expansion. The fire―revealing human nature in all its guises―became one of equally remarkable renewal\, as the city quickly rose back up from the ashes thanks to local determination and the world’s generosity and faith in Chicago’s future.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "On Account of Race" with Lawrence Goldstone
DESCRIPTION:ON ACCOUNT OF RACE\nThe Supreme Court\, White Supremacy\, and the Ravaging of African American Voting Rights\nBy the end of Reconstruction\, more than 500\,000 African Americans had registered to vote across the South. The vast majority were former slaves. By 1906\, less than ten percent remained. Beginning in 1876\, the Court systematically dismantled both the equal protection guarantees of the Fourteenth Amendment\, at least for African Americans\, and what seemed to be the guarantee of the right to vote in the Fifteenth. The Southern states used the grandfather clause\, poll taxes\, literacy tests\, and anything else they could to block African Americans from voting—including violence. Many were terrified to go the polls\, lest they be beaten\, murdered\, or have their homes burned to the ground. None of this was done in the shadows. Those determined to wrest the vote from black Americans could not have been more boastful in either intent or execution. The Court wrote decisions at odds with the Constitution and reinforced the racial stereotypes of the day. Even such noteworthy judges as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes approved the white population’s effort to keep the ballot box for themselves. Award-winning constitutional law historian Lawrence Goldstone examines case-based evidence to tell the story of this American tragedy\, the only occasion in United States history in which a group of citizens who had been granted the right to vote then had it stripped away–with full approval\, even the sponsorship\, of the United States Supreme Court on account of race.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Eleanor and Hick" with Susan Quinn
DESCRIPTION:ELEANOR AND HICK\nThe Love Affair That Shaped a First Lady\nThey couldn’t have been more different. Eleanor came from one of the nation’s most powerful political families; her marriage to her distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt took her straight to the White House. Lorena Hickok\, known as Hick\, grew up in rural South Dakota and worked as a servant girl after escaping from an abusive home. They met in 1932 when the buttoned-up Eleanor entered the claustrophobic\, duty-bound existence of the First Lady with dread.  By that time\, she had put her deep disappointment in her marriage behind her and developed an independent life—now threatened by the public role she would be forced to play. Hick\, now a feisty and respected campaign reporter for the Associated Press\, was her lifeline.  Over the next thirty years\, these fiercely compassionate women developed an extraordinary relationship and inspired each other to right the wrongs of the turbulent era in which they lived. During the Depression\, Hick reported from the nation’s poorest areas for the WPA; Eleanor used these reports to lobby her husband for New Deal programs. Hick also encouraged Eleanor to turn their frequent letters into her popular and long-lasting syndicated column “My Day” and befriend the female journalists who became her champions. When Eleanor’s tenure as First Lady ended with FDR’s death\, Hick pushed her to continue to use her popularity for good—advice Eleanor took by leading the UN’s postwar Human Rights Commission. This is a warm\, intimate account of two women who\, at different points\, were lovers\, confidantes\, professional advisors\, and caring friends. Together\, they played significant roles in one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Indomitable Florence Finch" with Robert Mrazek
DESCRIPTION:THE INDOMITABLE FLORENCE FINCH\nThe Untold Story of a War Widow Turned Resistance Fighter\nand Savior of American POWs\nFlorence Finch was an unlikely warrior.  Her mother was Filipino; her father was an American serviceman. As World War II drew close to the Philippines\, Florence fell in love with a dashing American naval intelligence agent\, Charles “Bing” Smith\, stationed in Manila.  When Bing was killed in battle\, the mild-mannered housewife became a fervent resistance fighter. In constant peril of arrest and execution\, she conceived a bold plan to divert tons of precious fuel from the Japanese army and sell it on the black market to secure desperately needed food and medicine for hundreds of American POWs. Florence’s little-known story unfolds against the Bataan Death March\, the fall of Corregidor\, and the daily struggle to survive a brutal occupying force. When she died at the age of 101 in New York\, few knew this unassuming woman was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. Long accustomed to keeping her secrets close in service of the Allies\, she waited fifty years to reveal the story of those dramatic and harrowing days to her own children. In The Indomitable Florence Finch\, award-winning military historian and former Congressman Robert J. Mrazek has secured her place among America’s pantheon of war heroes.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Ice at the End of the World"with Jon Gertner
DESCRIPTION:THE ICE AT THE END OF THE WORLD\nAn Epic Journey Into Greenland’s Buried Past and Our Perilous Future\nGreenland. Population 56\,000. Five times the size of California. It’s covered in an ice sheet 700 miles wide and 1\,500 miles long. That’s nearly three quadrillion tons of bone-chilling ice. For the last 150 years\, explorers and scientists have sought to understand this remote and mysterious island.  At first\, they hoped it was a gateway to the North Pole. Later\, they realized some of the most profound secrets about our planet and future were locked inside this vast and frozen white desert.  Today\, scientists from all over the world are deploying every technological tool available to tell us where we’ve been and where we’ve headed—before it’s too late. As Greenland’s ice melts and runs off into the sea\, it not only threatens hundreds of millions of people who live in coastal areas. It will also have drastic effects on ocean currents\, weather systems\, economies\, and migration patterns. In this gripping and important book\, Jon Gertner takes us to spots few journalists or even explorers have ever visited to understand what Greenland’s rapidly melting “ice at the end of the world” means to us all.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Romanov Sisters" with Helen Rappaport
DESCRIPTION:THE ROMANOV SISTERS\nThe Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra\nOlga.  Tatiana. Maria. Anastasia.  The Russian Grand Duchesses were among the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. Yet\, over the years\, most people only remember their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918. Through a treasure trove of previously unpublished letters and diaries\, archival sources\, as well as private collections\, this New York Times bestselling author gives us an intimate look at the Romanov sisters–from their privileged lifestyle to their joys and insecurities. This new and challenging take on their story reveals they were intelligent\, sensitive and perceptive witnesses to the dark turmoil within their immediate family and the ominous approach of the Russian Revolution\, the nightmare that would sweep their world away\, and them along with it. Helen Rappaport is also the author of The Last Days of the Romanovs and Caught in the Revolution\, The Romanov Sisters. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENT BRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Ghosts of Martha's Vineyard" with Thomas Dresser
DESCRIPTION:GHOSTS OF MARTHA’S VINEYARD\nThomas Dresser never saw a ghost or thought they existed—until he sat down to write this book. So what changed the local historian’s mind?  Too many eerie tales that have stood the test of time. Like the story of the whaleman’s widow who flicks the lights on and off\, tosses wine glasses around and appears by the fireplace of a popular Edgartown pub. Or the tale of specter Scottie who has spooked students at the Tisbury School for decades\, and the accounts of four-year-old Elizabeth Vanderhoof\, who drowned in 1928 and has been seen on the family homestead in Aquinnah ever since.   Creepy campgrounds. Unusual inns.  A jailhouse that will give you the jitters. As you hear about haunted happenings from all six island towns\, you’ll also learn about the Island’s not so spooky history. Thomas has lived and worked on Martha’s Vineyard for twenty five years and has written several historical books\, ranging from African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard to Martha’s Vineyard in World War II. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS \n \n

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Voyage of Mercy" with Stephen Puleo
DESCRIPTION:VOYAGE OF MERCY\nThe USS Jamestown\, The Irish Famine\, and the Remarkable Story of America’s First Humanitarian Mission\nMore than 5\,000 ships left Ireland during the great potato famine in the late 1840s\, transporting the starving and the destitute away from their stricken homeland. The USS Jamestown was the first vessel to sail in the other direction. In March 1847\, Captain Robert Bennet Forbes and his crew left Boston loaded with precious food to help the millions of Irish citizens unable to escape. This is the compelling story of one nation’s struggle to survive\, and another’s effort to provide a lifeline. In an unprecedented move by Congress\, a warship was stripped of its guns\, placed in civilian hands and committed to the peaceful delivery of food\, clothing\, and supplies. This single mission inspired an unprecedented outpouring of relief across the country and launched America’s first full-blown humanitarian relief effort. It also changed the world. No nation had ever extended a hand to a foreign neighbor for purely humanitarian reasons before. This single “Voyage of Mercy” showed that national generosity and brotherhood were not signs of weakness but displays of quiet strength and moral certitude.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Enemy of All Mankind" with Steven Johnson
DESCRIPTION:ENEMY OF ALL MANKIND\nA True Story of Piracy\, Power\, and History’s First Global Manhunt\nHenry Every was one of the 17th century’s most notorious pirates.  The press published wildly popular—and wildly inaccurate—reports of his nefarious exploits. The British government offered enormous bounties for his capture\, alive or (preferably) dead.  Every and his crew pulled off one of the most lucrative crimes in history which triggered the first international manhunt and the trial of the century. But that’s not really their legacy. They also inadvertently triggered a major shift in the global economy.  While this gripping\, real-life tale has plenty of “yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum” adventure\, it’s also the tale of the emergence of the East India Company\, the British Empire\, and the modern global marketplace. Somehow the actions of these unlikely pirates and their crime played a key role in the birth of multinational capitalism and changed the course of history forever.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "The Apocalypse Factory" with Steve Olson
DESCRIPTION:THE APOCALYPSE FACTORY\nPlutonium and the Making of the Atomic Age\nIt began with plutonium.  Or maybe it really began with fear—fear that the Germans would be the first to weaponize the atom. That’s the real reason\, in a matter of months\, the United States built the vast Hanford nuclear facility on the banks of the mighty Columbia River in eastern Washington State.  There\, far from prying eyes\, they charged scientists like Glenn Seaborg and Enrico Fermi\, with finding a way to create the substance at the core of the most destructive weapons ever developed: plutonium.  There\, thousands of physicists\, engineers\, laborers and support staff manufactured plutonium for the first atomic bombs to fuel the American nuclear arsenal. Author Steve Olson grew up just twenty miles from Hanford’s B Reactor and has always wondered why the facility has been largely overlooked in histories of the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. The Washington town played host to some of the most influential scientists and engineers in American history and played an important role in the race to construct weapons with the potential to win the war—and to end human civilization at the same time. In this look back at the making of the atomic age\, he also wonders how we can use our collective ingenuity again to address the threat that nuclear weapons pose today.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "Citizen Reporters" with Stephanie Gorton
DESCRIPTION:CITIZEN REPORTERS\nS.S. McClure\, Ida Tarbell\, and the Magazine That Rewrote America\nHe was an Irish immigrant\, who\, despite bouts of mania\, overthrew his impoverished upbringing and bent the New York media world to his will. She was his steadying hand\, a notoriously fearless journalist who defied the gender expectations of her time.  Meet S.S. McClure and Ida Tarbell. Together\, with their reporters Ray Stannard Baker and Lincoln Steffens\, they created one of the most influential magazines in American history: McClure’s. It drew over 400\,000 readers and published the groundbreaking stories that defined the Gilded Age\, including the investigation of Standard Oil that toppled the Rockefeller monopoly. This scrappy little group reported on labor unrest and lynching\, published exposes of municipal corruption\, and brought readers face to face with a nation mired in dysfunction.  Naturally\, this made some people mad. Including at least one president who called them “muckrakers” and “forces of evil.” From its meteoric rise to its spectacularly swift and dramatic combustion\, this powerhouse magazine cemented investigative journalism’s crucial role in democracy and gave America a new voice.  It also introduced Americans to the voices of Willa Cather\, Arthur Conan Doyle\, Robert Louis Stevenson\, Joseph Conrad\, and many others along the way.\n \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "George Washington\, Entrepreneur" with John Berlau
DESCRIPTION:GEORGE WASHINGTON\, ENTREPRENEUR\nHow Our Founding Father’s Private Business Pursuits\nChanged America and the World\nDescribe George Washington in three words. General. Statesman. Businessman.  Wait–businessman? Just when you think you know everything there is to know about our first president\, along comes a book like George Washington\, Entrepreneur. While Washington was indeed a gifted general and a political pragmatist\, he was also a patron of inventors\, inveterate tinkerer and heavyweight thinker. He was the first to breed horses with donkeys to produce the American mule. He grew countless varieties of trees on his estate and built a greenhouse full of exotic fruits\, herbs\, and plants there. Unlike his Virginia neighbors who remained wedded to tobacco\, Washington planted seven types of wheat. And\, he built a state-of-the-art mill to produce flour which he exported to Europe in sacks stamped “G. Washington”―one of the very first branded food products in America. Mount Vernon was also home to a distillery and became one of the largest American whiskey producers of the era.  This book is a refreshing look at a great man and a timely reminder of the role entrepreneurship played in this country’s history.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL TALK: "12 Seconds of Silence" with Jamie Holmes
DESCRIPTION:12 SECONDS OF SILENCE\nHow a Team of Inventors\, Tinkerers\, and Spies Took Down a Nazi Superweapon\nThey were an unlikely wartime team\, an eccentric and eclectic band of American physicists\, engineers\, inventors and everyday Joes and Janes.  They worked in a secretive organization known only as Section T.  Their mission: to build something that would help the Allies knock enemy airplanes out of the air. In a race against time and against overwhelming odds\, the members of Section T developed one of the world’s first “smart” weapons. At first glance\, it was a humble little fuse.  However\, their invention turned out to be not so humble.  In fact\, the “proximity fuse” was the sought-after holy grail. The technology would eventually save countless lives\, rescue the city of London from the onslaught of a Nazi superweapon and help bring about the Axis defeat. While this is a largely untold and perhaps forgotten tale of wartime technology\, back then military leaders knew one thing for sure.  The atomic bomb ended the war\, but the proximity fuse won it. \nPURCHASE THIS BOOK ONLINE FROM EIGHT COUSINS BOOKSTORE \n\nREGISTER THROUGH EVENT BRITE\nNONMEMBERS $10/MEMBERS $5 \n  \nTO RECEIVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT:\nClick on the registration link above to go to Eventbrite.\nClick “REGISTER” on the Eventbrite page.\nClick “ENTER PROMO CODE” on the next screen.\nIn the Promo Code field\, enter the email address associated with your Museums on the Green membership\, then click APPLY.\nYou will see a discount on your ORDER SUMMARY.\nClick “CHECKOUT” to complete your transaction.\nFor assistance\, email info@museumsonthegreen.org \n  \nMANY THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
