SUMMARY:Howard Blum\, "In the Enemy's House"
DESCRIPTION:The New York Times bestselling author of Dark Invasion and The Last Goodnight once again illuminates the lives of little-known individuals who played a significant role in America’s history as he chronicles the incredible true story of a critical\, recently declassified counterintelligence mission and two remarkable agents whose story has been called “the greatest secret of the Cold War.” \nIn 1946\, genius linguist and codebreaker Meredith Gardner discovered that the KGB was running an extensive network of strategically placed spies inside the United States\, whose goal was to infiltrate American intelligence and steal the nation’s military and atomic secrets. Over the course of the next decade\, he and young FBI supervisor Bob Lamphere worked together on Venona\, a top-secret mission to uncover the Soviet agents and protect the Holy Grail of Cold War espionage—the atomic bomb. \nOpposites in nearly every way\, Lamphere and Gardner relentlessly followed a trail of clues that helped them identify and take down these Soviet agents one by one\, including Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. But at the center of this spy ring\, seemingly beyond the American agents’ grasp\, was the mysterious master spy who pulled the strings of the KGB’s extensive campaign\, dubbed Operation Enormoz by Russian Intelligence headquarters. Lamphere and Gardner began to suspect that a mole buried deep in the American intelligence community was feeding Moscow Center information on Venona. They raced to unmask the traitor and prevent the Soviets from fulfilling Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s threat: “We shall bury you!” \nA breathtaking chapter of American history and a page-turning mystery that plays out against the tense\, life-and-death gamesmanship of the Cold War\, this twisting thriller begins at the end of World War II and leads all the way to the execution of the Rosenbergs—a result that haunted both Gardner and Lamphere to the end of their lives. \n  \nSponsored by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod

SUMMARY:Jessica Shattuck\, "The Women in the Castle" (To be held at John Wesley Methodist Church\, Falmouth)
DESCRIPTION:Amid the ashes of Nazi Germany’s defeat\, Marianne von Lingenfels returns to the once-grand castle of her husband’s ancestors\, an imposing stone fortress now fallen into ruin following years of war. The widow of a resister murdered in the failed July 20\, 1944\, plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler\, Marianne plans to uphold the promise she made to her husband’s brave conspirators: to find and protect their wives\, her fellow resistance widows. \nFirst Marianne rescues six-year-old Martin\, the son of her dearest childhood friend\, from a Nazi reeducation home. Together\, they make their way across the smoldering wreckage of their homeland to Berlin\, where Martin’s mother\, the beautiful and naive Benita\, has fallen into the hands of occupying Red Army soldiers. Then she locates Ania\, another resister’s wife\, and her two \nboys\, now refugees languishing in one of the many camps that house the millions displaced by the war. \nAs Marianne assembles this makeshift family from the ruins of her husband’s resistance movement\, she is certain their shared pain and circumstances will hold them together. But she quickly discovers that the black-and-white\, highly principled world of her privileged past has become infinitely more complicated\, filled with secrets and dark passions that threaten to tear them apart. Eventually\, all three women must come to terms with the choices that have defined their lives before\, during\, and after the war—each with their own unique share of challenges. \nWritten with the devastating emotional power of The Nightingale\, Sarah’s Key\, and The Light Between Oceans\, Jessica Shattuck’s evocative and utterly enthralling novel offers a fresh perspective on one of the most tumultuous periods in history. Combining piercing social insight and vivid historical atmosphere\, The Women in the Castle is a dramatic yet nuanced portrait of war and its repercussions that explores what it means to survive\, love\, and\, ultimately\, to forgive in the wake of unimaginable hardship. \n  \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE HELD AT THE JOHN WESLEY METHODIST CHURCH\, 270 GIFFORD STREET\, FALMOUTH \nSponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank

SUMMARY:Elaine Weiss\, "The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote"
DESCRIPTION:The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. \nNashville\, August 1920. Thirty-five states have ratified the Nineteenth Amendment\, twelve have rejected or refused to vote\, and one last state is needed. It all comes down to Tennessee\, the moment of truth for the suffragists\, after a seven-decade crusade. The opposing forces include politicians with careers at stake\, liquor companies\, railroad magnates\, and a lot of racists who don’t want black women voting. And then there are the “Antis”–women who oppose their own enfranchisement\, fearing suffrage will bring about the moral collapse of the nation. They all converge in a boiling hot summer for a vicious face-off replete with dirty tricks\, betrayals and bribes\, bigotry\, Jack Daniel’s\, and the Bible. \nFollowing a handful of remarkable women who led their respective forces into battle\, along with appearances by Woodrow Wilson\, Warren Harding\, Frederick Douglass\, and Eleanor Roosevelt\, “The Woman’s Hour” is an inspiring story of activists winning their own freedom in one of the last campaigns forged in the shadow of the Civil War\, and the beginning of the great twentieth-century battles for civil rights. \n  \nThis lecture made possible in part by a grant from Mass Humanities.

SUMMARY:Larry Loftis\, "Into the Lion's Mouth"
DESCRIPTION:“Into the Lion’s Mouth: the True Story of Dusko Popov: World War II Spy\, Patriot and the Real Life Inspiration for James Bond” \nJames Bond has nothing on British double agent Dusko Popov.  As an operative for the Abwehr\, SD\, MI5\, MI6\, and FBI during World War II\, Popov seduced countless women―including agents on both sides―spoke five languages\, and was a crack shot\, all while maintaining his cover as a Yugoslav diplomat…\n\nOn a cool August evening in 1941\, a Serbian playboy created a stir at Casino Estoril in Portugal by throwing down an outrageously large baccarat bet to humiliate his opponent. The Serbian was a British double agent\, and the money―which he had just stolen from the Germans―belonged to the British. From the sideline\, watching with intent interest was none other than Ian Fleming…The Serbian was Dusko Popov. As a youngster\, he was expelled from his London prep school. Years later he would be arrested and banished from Germany for making derogatory statements about the Third Reich. When World War II ensued\, the playboy became a spy\, eventually serving three dangerous masters: the Abwehr\, MI5 and MI6\, and the FBI.\nOn August 10\, 1941\, the Germans sent Popov to the United States to construct a spy network and gather information on Pearl Harbor. The FBI ignored his German questionnaire\, but J. Edgar Hoover succeeded in blowing his cover. While MI5 desperately needed Popov to deceive the Abwehr about the D-Day invasion\, they assured him that a return to the German Secret Service Headquarters in Lisbon would result in torture and execution. He went anyway…\nInto the Lion’s Mouth is a globe-trotting account of a man’s entanglement with espionage\, murder\, assassins\, and lovers―including enemy spies and a Hollywood starlet. It is a story of subterfuge and seduction\, patriotism\, and cold-blooded courage. It is the story of Dusko Popov―the inspiration for James Bond. \nSponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank

SUMMARY:Richard Aldous\, "Schlesinger: The Imperial Historian": THIS EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO AUTHOR ILLNESS
DESCRIPTION:Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. (1917–2007)\, known today as the architect of John F. Kennedy’s presidential legacy\, blazed an extraordinary path from Harvard University to wartime London to the West Wing. The son of a pioneering historian―and a two-time Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner in his own right―Schlesinger redefined the art of presidential biography. A Thousand Days\, his best-selling and immensely influential record of the Kennedy administration\, cemented Schlesinger’s place as one of the nation’s greatest political image makers and a key figure of the American intellectual elite―a peer and contemporary of Reinhold Niebuhr\, Isaiah Berlin\, and Adlai Stevenson. \nThe first major biography of this defining figure in Kennedy’s Camelot\, Schlesinger: The Imperial Historian presents a dramatic life and career set against the backdrop of the American Century. Biographer Richard Aldous draws on oral history\, rarely seen archival documents\, and the official Schlesinger papers to craft a portrait of the incandescently brilliant and controversial historian who framed America’s ascent to global empire. \n\n  \nDUE TO AUTHOR ILLNESS\, WE MUST UNFORTUNATELY CANCEL THIS EVENT \n  \nSponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank

SUMMARY:David Powers\, "Puritans and Gun Control"
DESCRIPTION:PURITANS AND GUN CONTROL \nDone in conjunction with the Falmouth No Place For Hate alliance and the Falmouth Gun Buyback Program \nHow did guns fit into the culture which the earliest European settlers brought with them to New England\, when Massachusetts was the “wild west” frontier on the continent of North America? Is there anything in 17th century firearms regulations which can inform the present controversies about guns\, violence\, and freedom? \nIn “Puritans and Gun Control\,” David M. Powers explores the specific rules Massachusetts Puritans developed about guns in the early 1600s. His analysis offers some surprises\, especially for those who may have assumed it was “every man for himself” in the old days.

SUMMARY:Will Englund\, "March 1917"
DESCRIPTION:“We are provincials no longer\,” declared Woodrow Wilson on March 5\, 1917\, at his second inauguration. He spoke on the eve of America’s entrance into World War I\, just as Russia teetered between autocracy and democracy. In the face of chaos and turmoil in Europe\, Wilson was determined to move America away from the isolationism that had defined the nation’s foreign policy since its inception and to embrace an active role in shaping world affairs. \nJust ten days later\, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the Russian throne\, ending a three-centuries-long dynasty and plunging his country into a new era of uncertainty\, ultimately paving the way for the creation of a Soviet empire. \nWithin a few short weeks\, at Wilson’s urging\, Congress voted to declare war on Germany\, asserting the United States’ new role as a global power and its commitment to spreading American ideals abroad. Yet at home it remained a Jim Crow nation\, and African Americans had their own struggle to pursue. American women were agitating for the vote and a greater role in society\, and labor strife was rampant. As a consequence of the war that followed\, the United States and Russia were to endure a century of wariness and hostility that flickers and flares to this day. \nMarch 1917 reexamines these tumultuous events and their consequences in a compelling new analysis. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary Russian and American diaries\, memoirs\, oral histories\, and newspaper accounts\, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Will Englund creates a highly detailed and textured account of the month that transformed the world’s greatest nations. March 1917 considers the dreams of that year’s warriors\, pacifists\, activists\, revolutionaries\, and reactionaries\, and demonstrates how their successes and failures constitute the origin story of our complex modern world. \nSponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank

SUMMARY:Glenn Stout\, "The Selling of the Babe" (TO BE HELD AT FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH\, FALMOUTH)
DESCRIPTION:The sale of Babe Ruth by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1919 is one of the pivotal moments in baseball history\, changing the fortunes of two of baseball’s most storied franchises\, changing the game forever and helping to create the legend of the greatest player the game has ever known. \nMore than a simple transaction\, the sale resulted in a deal that created the Yankee dynasty\, turned Boston into an also-ran\, sold the American people on the modern home run era after the Black Sox scandal and led the public to fall in love with Ruth. Award-winning baseball historian Glenn Stout reveals brand-new information about Babe and the unique political situation surrounding his sale\, including: \n– The political battle among baseball’s elite that inspired the sale. \n– How Prohibition and the lifting of Blue Laws in New York affected Yankees owner and beer baron Jacob Ruppert. \n– Reveals how a shortage of quality wool due to World War One led to changes in the way baseballs were made that resulted in the inadvertent creation of the “lively” ball. \n– Uncovers Ruth’s disruptive influence on the Red Sox in 1918 and 1919\, and uses  sabermetrics to showing his negative impact on the team as he transitioned from pitcher to outfielder. \nThe Selling of Babe is the first book to focus on the ramifications of the sale and captures the central moment of Ruth’s evolution from player to icon\, and will appeal to fans of The Kid and Pinstripe Empire. Babe’s sale to New York and the subsequent selling of Ruth to America led baseball from the Deadball Era and sparked a new era in the game\, one revolved around the long ball and one man\, The Babe. \nSponsored by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod

SUMMARY:George Daughan\, "Lexington and Concord"
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Lexington and Concord challenges the prevailing narrative of the American War of Independence. It was\, author George Daughan argues\, based as much in economic concerns as political ones. When Massachusetts militiamen turned out in overwhelming numbers to fight the British\, they believed they were fighting for their farms and livelihoods\, as well as for liberty. \n \nBenjamin Franklin was not surprised by this widespread belief. In the years prior to the Revolution\, Franklin had toured Great Britain and witnessed the wretched living conditions of the king’s subjects. They wore rags for clothes\, went barefoot\, and had little to eat. They were not citizens\, but serfs. Franklin described the appalling situation in a number of letters home. In the eyes of many American colonists\, Britain’s repressive measures were not seen simply as an effort to reestablish political control of the colonies\, but also as a means to reduce the prosperous colonists themselves to the serfdom described in the Franklin letters. \nAnother key factor in the outcome of this historic battle\, according to Daughan\, was the scorn British officers had for colonial fighters. Although the British officers had fought alongside colonial Americans in the ferocious French and Indian War\, they failed to anticipate the skill\, organization\, and sheer numbers of the colonial militias. Daughan explains how British arrogance led them to defeat at the hands of motivated\, experienced patriot fighters determined to protect their way of life. \nSponsored by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod

SUMMARY:Tori Telfer\, "Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History"
DESCRIPTION:When you think of serial killers throughout history\, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper\, John Wayne Gacy\, and Ted Bundy. But what about Tillie Klimek\, Moulay Hassan\, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime\, not the perpetrators. In fact\, serial killers are thought to be so universally\, overwhelmingly male that in 1998\, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference\, “There are no female serial killers.” \nLady Killers\, based on the popular online series that appeared on Jezebel and The Hairpin\, disputes that claim and offers fourteen gruesome examples as evidence. Though largely forgotten by history\, female serial killers such as Erzsébet Báthory\, Nannie Doss\, Mary Ann Cotton\, and Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova rival their male counterparts in cunning\, cruelty\, and appetite for destruction. \nEach chapter explores the crimes and history of a different subject\, and then proceeds to unpack her legacy and her portrayal in the media\, as well as the stereotypes and sexist clichés that inevitably surround her. The first book to examine female serial killers through a feminist lens with a witty and dryly humorous tone\, Lady Killers dismisses easy explanations (she was hormonal\, she did it for love\, a man made her do it) and tired tropes (she was a femme fatale\, a black widow\, a witch)\, delving into the complex reality of female aggression and predation. Featuring 14 illustrations from Dame Darcy\, Lady Killers is a bloodcurdling\, insightful\, and irresistible journey into the heart of darkness. \nSponsored by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod

SUMMARY:Casey Sherman\, "Above and Beyond"
DESCRIPTION:From the authors of the bestselling The Finest Hours\, the riveting\, deeply human story of President John F. Kennedy and two U-2 pilots\, Rudy Anderson and Chuck Maultsby\, who risked their lives to save America during the Cuban Missile Crisis. \n\n\nDuring an infamous thirteen-day stretch of October 1962\, America faced the prospect of imminent nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Two things saved humanity: the strategic wisdom of John F. Kennedy\, and the U-2 aerial spy program. \nAbove and Beyond tells the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis through the eyes of three characters: Kennedy\, and two U-2 pilots\, Rudy Anderson and Charles Maultsby\, who found themselves in the crosshairs of history\, on the worst and most intense day of the crisis. \n\n\nAnderson\, a decorated combat pilot\, embarked on a top-secret mission from McCoy Air Force Base\, Florida\, to fly his U-2 spy plane over Cuba to photograph evidence that five Soviet R-2 missile sites are up and running. \nAt the same time\, thousands of miles away in Alaska\, Maultsby climbed into his own U-2 spy plane and took off on what was believed to be a routine mission to the North Pole to gather radioactive air samples from a recent Russian nuclear test. But just after 12 PM\, Maultsby suddenly became disoriented and steered his plane into Soviet airspace. \nIn the White House\, Kennedy\, strained from back pain\, sleeplessness\, and days impossible tension\, was briefed about Maultsby and his missing U-2. If detected by the Soviets\, its presence in Soviet air space could be considered an act of war. But as the president and his advisers wrestled with this information\, more bad news came: another U-2 had gone missing–this time over Cuba. \nAbove and Beyond is a deeply researched\, gripping account of the lives of these three men\, war heroes all\, who were brought together during a day that could have changed history. \nSponsored by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod

SUMMARY:Jill Farinelli\, "The Palatine Wreck: The Legend of the New England Ghost Ship"
DESCRIPTION:Two days after Christmas in 1738\, a British merchant ship traveling from Rotterdam to Philadelphia grounded in a blizzard on the northern tip of Block Island\, twelve miles off the Rhode Island coast. The ship carried emigrants from the Palatinate and its neighboring territories in what is now southwest Germany. The 105 passengers and crew on board—sick\, frozen\, and starving—were all that remained of the 340 men\, women\, and children who had left their homeland the previous spring. They now found themselves castaways\, on the verge of death\, and at the mercy of a community of strangers whose language they did not speak. \nShortly after the wreck\, rumors began to circulate that the passengers had been mistreated by the ship’s crew and by some of the islanders. The stories persisted\, transforming over time as stories do and\, in less than a hundred years\, two terrifying versions of the event had emerged. \nIn one account\, the crew murdered the captain\, extorted money from the passengers by prolonging the voyage and withholding food\, then abandoned ship. In the other\, the islanders lured the ship ashore with a false signal light\, then murdered and robbed all on board. Some claimed the ship was set ablaze to hide evidence of these crimes\, their stories fueled by reports of a fiery ghost ship first seen drifting in Block Island Sound on the one-year anniversary of the wreck. These tales became known as the legend of the Palatine\, the name given to the ship in later years\, when its original name had been long forgotten. The flaming apparition was nicknamed the Palatine Light. \nThe eerie phenomenon has been witnessed by hundreds of people over the centuries\, and numerous scientific theories have been offered as to its origin. Its continued reappearances\, along with the attention of some of nineteenth-century America’s most notable writers—among them Richard Henry Dana Sr.\, John Greenleaf Whittier\, Edward Everett Hale\, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson—has helped keep the legend alive. This despite evidence that the vessel\, whose actual name was the Princess Augusta\, was never abandoned\, lured ashore\, or destroyed by fire. \nSo how did the rumors begin? What really happened to the Princess Augusta and the passengers she carried on her final\, fatal voyage? Through years of painstaking research\, Jill Farinelli reconstructs the origins of one of New England’s most chilling maritime mysteries.

SUMMARY:Miguel Moniz\, "The Portuguese Migration: How they Shaped Falmouth's History"
DESCRIPTION:A history of Falmouth as told through a century of Portuguese migration: Strawberries and Portuguese civic\, religious and economic associations. A special and FREE event\, open to all! \nThis talk provides a history of Falmouth from the point of view of the Portuguese settlers who began coming to the town in the decades before 1900. In a period of just a few decades\, the numbers of Portuguese in the town swelled to make them not only the single largest ethnic group in Falmouth\, but the dominant settler group of what was largely vacated farmland referred to at the time as the “eastern part of the town.” \nHow the Portuguese became important players in New England agriculture will be discusses along with how the strawberry industry was developed through partnerships among the Portuguese with Falmouth’s business community\, agricultural officials\, and representatives in local and state government\, including individuals like the Cape Cod strawberry growers’ business manager George Lillie and county agricultural agent Bertram Tomlinson. \nThe history of Portuguese associations will be illustrated with stories of cooperation and conflict among the Portuguese farmers and their founding of farmer’s cooperatives; a look at some of the civic and beneficial organizations formed by the Portuguese and how these associations helped them to influence local politics; the Portuguese’ founding of St. Anthony’s and their participation in other churches; and the establishment and importance of the Holy Ghost Brotherhoods of Falmouth (along with others in the area and the region)\, including some that have been continuously active since the late 1800s and still exist today. \nFalmouth history will be examined from the first decades of the 1900s until after World War II. Early 20th century communities in the northeast were responding to changes brought on by industrialization with the political climate of these decades (much like the current moment) witness to the rise of racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric\, culminating in the passing of restrictive migration laws\, and social policy that effected not only the migrants but also other laborers. How these attitudes were confronted in Falmouth\, by both the Portuguese migrants\, the native residents of the town\, and business and political interests reveals much about the social history of migration in the US\, and is instructive to understand contemporary migrant issues. \nThe impact on Falmouth’s Portuguese community as a result of the Azorean Relief Act and changes to US migration law will also be examined. \nMiguel Moniz is an anthropologist who has written extensively about Portuguese migration in New England. He is a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant Fellow at the University of Lisbon\, working on the New England track of the multi sited project COLOUR—an examination of race\, identity and labor practices among migrant workers. Moniz’ other ethno-history projects include studies of Portuguese socio-religious associations\, migrant deportations\, soccer in migrant communities and Portuguese brass bands. Born in Falmouth\, Moniz has lived in Portugal over the past 25 years. He studied at Brown (PhD\, Anthropology\, 2004)\, is a graduate of FHS (class of 87)\, and a proud recipient of the Falmouth Public Library’s Book Award for excellence in Social Studies at Falmouth High School

SUMMARY:Liza Mundy\, "Code Girls"
DESCRIPTION:Recruited from small Southern towns and posh New England colleges\, ten thousand American women served the U.S. Army and Navy as code breakers during World War II. Under strict vows of secrecy\, the women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of cryptanalysis. Their code-breaking triumphs shortened the war\, saved countless lives\, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. In the process\, many got their first taste of the big city\, became lifelong friends\, and fell in and out of love amid the heartbreak of war. \nAt the heart of this story is Dot Braden\, a feisty Virginia schoolteacher who\, in 1943\, leapt at the chance to take a mysterious job with the Army at a place called Arlington Hall. In this book\, the children and grandchildren of Dot\, who is still alive at age 96\, and those of thousands of other women will finally learn the astonishing scope of their accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Maureen Boyle\, "Shallow Graves: The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer"
DESCRIPTION:Eleven women went missing over the spring and summer of 1988 in New Bedford\, Massachusetts\, an old fishing port known as the Whaling City\, where Moby Dick\, Frederick Douglass\, textile mills\, and heroin-dealing represent just a few of the many threads in the community’s diverse fabric. Investigative reporter Maureen Boyle tells the story of a case that has haunted New England for thirty years. \nThe Crimes: The skeletal remains of nine of the women\, aged nineteen to thirty-six\, were discovered near highways around New Bedford. Some had clearly been strangled\, others were so badly decomposed that police were left to guess how they had died. \nThe Victims: All the missing women had led troubled lives of drug addiction\, prostitution\, and domestic violence\, including Nancy Paiva\, whose sister was a hard-working employee of the City of New Bedford\, and Debra Greenlaw DeMello\, who came from a solidly middle-class family but fell into drugs and abusive relationships. In a bizarre twist\, Paiva’s clothes were found near DeMello’s body. \nThe Investigators: Massachusetts state troopers Maryann Dill and Jose Gonsalves were the two constants in a complex cast of city\, county\, and state cops and prosecutors. They knew the victims\, the suspects\, and the drug-and-crime-riddled streets of New Bedford. They were present at the beginning of the case and they stayed to the bitter end. \nThe Suspects: Kenneth Ponte\, a New Bedford attorney and deputy sheriff with an appetite for drugs and prostitutes\, landed in the investigative crosshairs from the start. He was indicted by a grand jury in the murder of one of the victims\, but those charges were later dropped. Anthony DeGrazia was a loner who appeared to fit the classic serial-killer profile: horrific childhood abuse\, charming\, charismatic\, but prone to bursts of violence. He hunted prostitutes in the city by night and served at a Catholic church by day. Which of these two was the real killer? Or was it someone else entirely? \nDrawing on more than one hundred interviews\, along with police reports\, first-person accounts\, and field reporting both during the killings and more recently\, Ms. Boyle brings the reader behind the scenes of the investigation\, onto the streets of the city\, and into the homes of the families still hoping for answers.

SUMMARY:Dan Kennedy\, "The Return of the Moguls"
DESCRIPTION:How Jeff Bezos and John Henry are Remaking Newspapers for the 21st Century \nOver the course of a generation\, the story of the daily newspaper has been an unchecked slide from record profitability and readership to plummeting profits\, increasing irrelevance\, and inevitable obsolescence. The forces killing major dailies\, alternative weeklies\, and small-town shoppers are well understood—or seem obvious in hindsight\, at least—and the catalog of publications that have gone under reads like a who’s who of American journalism. During the past half-century\, old-style press barons gave way to a cabal of corporate interests who were unable or unwilling to invest in the future even as technological change was destroying their core business. The Taylor family sold the Boston Globe to the New York Times Company in 1993 for a cool $1.1 billion. Twenty years later\, the Times Company resold it for just $70 million. The unexpected story\, however\, is not what they sold it for but who they sold it to: John Henry\, the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox. \nA billionaire who made his money in the world of high finance\, Henry inspired optimism in Boston because of his track record as a public-spirited business executive—and because his deep pockets seemed to ensure that the shrunken newspaper would not be subjected to further downsizing. In just a few days\, the sale of the Globe was overtaken by much bigger news: Jeff Bezos\, the founder of Amazon and one of the world’s richest people\, had reached a deal to buy the Washington Post for $250 million. \nHenry’s ascension at the Globe sparked hope. Bezos’s purchase seemed to inspire nothing short of ecstasy\, as numerous observers expressed the belief that his lofty status as one of our leading digital visionaries could help him solve the daunting financial problems facing the newspaper business. \nThough Bezos and Henry are the two most prominent individuals to enter the newspaper business\, a third preceded them. Aaron Kushner\, a greeting-card executive\, acquired California’s Orange County Register in July 2012 then pursued an audacious agenda\, expanding coverage and hiring journalists in an era when nearly all other newspaper owners were trying to avoid cutting both. \nThe Return of the Moguls chronicles a story in the making. Is a return to old-style individual ownership sparking a renaissance for the newspaper business\, and if so\, how?

SUMMARY:Robertson Dinsmore\, "Lightships of Cape Cod"
DESCRIPTION:Illustrated talk on lightships which were floating lighthouses positioned where land based lighthouses could not be built.  They marked the entrance to harbor channels and the navigational routes around reefs and shoals.  The first American lightship was in 1820 and the number grew to a maximum of 55 lightships by 1900 compared to 1\,460 lighthouses. The early lightships were of wood\, no engines\, with oil lamps and hand- rung fog bells. Later lightships had engines\, built of steel\, and with electric lights and power operated fog horns.   Almost half of all lightships were in or near Cape Cod waters.  Ten lightships were lost to storms and five in collisions. The last active lightship (Nantucket) was removed from service in 1985.  Nine remaining lightship hulls are museum artifacts. The old Nantucket Lightship is berthed at East Boston and open to visitors.

SUMMARY:Richard Thomas\, "Why Bob Dylan Matters"
DESCRIPTION:When the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016\, a debate raged. Some celebrated\, while many others questioned the choice.  How could the world’s most prestigious book prize be awarded to a famously cantankerous singer-songwriter who wouldn’t even deign to attend the medal ceremony? \nIn Why Bob Dylan Matters\, Harvard Professor Richard F. Thomas answers this question with magisterial erudition. A world expert on Classical poetry\, Thomas was initially ridiculed by his colleagues for teaching a course on Bob Dylan alongside his traditional seminars on Homer\, Virgil\, and Ovid. Dylan’s Nobel Prize brought him vindication\, and he immediately found himself thrust into the spotlight as a leading academic voice in all matters Dylanological. Today\, through his wildly popular Dylan seminar—affectionately dubbed “Dylan 101″—Thomas is introducing a new generation of fans and scholars to the revered bard’s work. \nThis witty\, personal volume is a distillation of Thomas’s famous course\, and makes a compelling case for moving Dylan out of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the pantheon of Classical poets. Asking us to reflect on the question\, “What makes a classic?”\, Thomas offers an eloquent argument for Dylan’s modern relevance\, while interpreting and decoding Dylan’s lyrics for readers.
