DESCRIPTION:This tour is now sold out\, thank you!\nThe Very Unmerry Christmas Tour \nThursday January 4th\, 2024 at 3pm \nMerry Christmas? I do not think so! \nJoin the Falmouth Historical Society’s Executive Director Rachel Lovett and Research Manager Meg Costello on an informative and comical journey to hear how New Englanders did not actually celebrate Christmas until the mid to late 19th century. Using the Society’s c. 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House\, as a backdrop\, the pair will share stories about how Christmas evolved into the holiday we love today through literature from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and Falmouth’s own poet Katharine Lee Bates’ “Goody Santa Claus.” From Puritans outlawing Christmas to dubious 19th century Falmouth Congregational ministers frowning upon festivities but secretly supplying gifts for children\, this tour is a fun and informative way to celebrate\, and learn a little more about our New England predecessors. \n$25 per person/$15 Members. Recommended for children 15+

Use the crosswalk to cross Locust St. and head towards the large boulder of the Mariners’ Memorial. Opposite the Memorial\, across Mill Rd.\, join your tour guide at the top of Cemetery Lane. \nRegistrations for this walk must be paid online in advance. DESCRIPTION:DINING WITH JANE AUSTEN \n \nThursday\, January 25th 1pm \nThe family of Dr. Francis Wicks lived in the beautiful house on Falmouth’s town green (now owned by the Falmouth Historical Society) during the era English author Jane Austen (1775-1817) was writing her beloved novels. There were many similarities in to Austen’s England here in Falmouth from social graces\, room usage\, and architecture. This exciting virtual talk will focus on food history of the period. \nWhat’s a rout cake? Does Mr. Woodhouse like any food at all? What might Lady Catherine serve for dinner to her exalted guests? Fans of Jane Austen’s novels will appreciate this look into the dining styles of late 18th and early 19th century England. References to the novels will accompany this presentation of the dining styles of England’s late Georgian and Regency eras. \n$10 per person/$5 Members.
