Joel Nelson is a British historian and author whose work focuses on political history and influential figures. He is a former Kennedy Scholar and has served as an assistant editor at Foreign Affairs. He studied at Oxford and Harvard Universities.

His debut book, Kennedy’s Only Hero, highlights the impact of Winston Churchill on John F. Kennedy. The book examines the profound influence Winston Churchill had on John F. Kennedy, detailing how Kennedy’s early admiration for Churchill shaped his political philosophy, campaign strategies, and approach to international relations. The work draws on unpublished archival material to provide new insights into the relationship between these two historical figures.

Although Kennedy’s Only Hero focuses on Churchill’s impact, the Kennedys themselves shared a special connection with Falmouth. JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy often visited The Antiquarian, an antique shop on Palmer Avenue, where they admired a distinctive pink West Falmouth granite stone. Jacqueline later recalled that stone when collaborating with architect John Carl Warnecke on the design of the president’s gravesite and eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery. The family also maintained close ties with Falmouth interior designer Robert Luddington, who exchanged design sketches and handwritten correspondence with Jackie and Rose Kennedy for many years.
