VIRTUAL TALK: “How to Hide an Empire” with Daniel Immerwahr
April 6, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$10.00HOW TO HIDE AN EMPIRE
A History of the Greater United States
This is the story of the United States outside the United Sates. It is the expansive tale of America’s global conquests, the actual territories this country has inhabited and governed to build an empire. Like the Guano Islands, where prospectors collected one of the nineteenth century’s most valuable commodities. Like the Philippines, the site of the most destructive event on U.S. soil. Like Puerto Rico, where U.S. doctors conducted grisly experiments they would have never dared on the mainland. America’s empire once extended well beyond the 50 states, but in the years after World War II, everything shifted. The United States moved away from colonialism and used innovations in technology, electronics, transportation and culture to gain economic power and influence and redefine what empire and globalization mean today.
