VIRTUAL TALK: “Sermons in Stone: The Stone Walls of New England” with Susan Allport
March 25, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FREESERMONS IN STONE
The Stone Walls of New England & New York
In 1871 there were 252,539 miles of stone walls in New England and New York―enough to circle the earth ten times. But what do we actually know about them? Who built them–and why? Susan Allport is an award-winning writer specializing in science, travel and food. She began thinking about these humble structures when she moved to Katonah, NY, and started talking walks in woods crisscrossed with walls. This illuminating history of walls begins quite by accident. During the Ice Age, glaciers almost a mile thick scraped over the Hudson Valley carrying stones from other places and randomly depositing them here. But historical records show people—everyone from farmers, slaves, Indians, indentured servants and children—have intentionally built these fascinating, peculiar and sometimes downright eccentric structures for purposes entirely their own.
