VIRTUAL TALK: “The Crowded Hour” with Clay Risen
June 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FREETHE CROWDED HOUR
Theodore Roosevelt, The Rough Riders and the Dawn of the American Century
When America declared war on Spain in 1898, the US Army numbered 26,000 men, scattered around the country. Hardly an army at all. In fact, Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders was born out of desperation. At first glance, they were a motley group of volunteers—heavier on Ivy League athletes and Arizona cowboys than traditional soldiers. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for in daring. After a series of gripping bloody fights across Cuba and the infamous charge in the Battle of San Juan Hill, the Rough Riders became one of the most famous regiments in American history. “The instant I received the order,” wrote Roosevelt, “I sprang on my horse and then my ‘crowded hour’ began.” It was a turning point for Roosevelt who continued riding that horse all the way to the White House just three years later. It was a turning point for the country as well. In just six short months, this “splendid little war” destroyed the Spanish Empire and put America on the brink of a new global dominance.
