How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine
In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell did the impossible. She became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. Her younger sister also did the impossible. In fact, Emily was the more brilliant physician. Though the world at first recoiled at the thought of women studying medicine, their intelligence and tenacity ultimately won them acceptance in the male medical establishment. And together they founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, the first hospital staffed entirely by women. From Bristol, Paris, and Edinburgh to the rising cities of antebellum America, this richly researched biography celebrates two complicated pioneers whose convictions did not always align with the emergence of women’s rights―or with each other. Yet, they tore down the limits for women in medicine for all time. As Elizabeth predicted, “a hundred years hence, women will not be what they are now.”
