VIRTUAL TALK: “The Gun, The Ship and the Pen” with Linda Colley
August 10, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$10.00 THE GUN, THE SHIP, AND THE PEN
Warfare, Constitutions, and the Making of the Modern World
The United States Constitution was written in 1787. The first three words are “we the people.” But we are not the first or the only people to create a written governing document. Corsica can claim its pioneering constitution of 1755. The tiny Pitcairn Island in the Pacific was the first place on the globe to permanently enfranchise women. And decades before our Founding Fathers framed the American constitution, unexpected players, such as Catherine the Great of Russia, experimented with constitutional techniques with her enlightened Nakaz. The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen traces the global history of these famous and sometimes marginalized documents from the 1750s to the twentieth century and the colorful characters who helped create them. She also uncovers the close connections they have to the war and the rise of empires and nations.
