VIRTUAL TALK: “They Knew They Were Pilgrims” with John Turner

September 10, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$10.00

THEY KNEW THEY WERE PILGRIMS:
Plymouth Colony and the Contest for American Liberty

Sinners or saints? In 1620, separatists from the Church of England set sail across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower. They saw themselves as spiritual pilgrims, seeking the freedom to worship God in accordance with their understanding of the Bible. Others have an alternative, more dispiriting view of the Pilgrims.  In it, they were religious zealots who persecuted dissenters, stole land and  waged war with the Native peoples.  Four hundred years later, we’re still trying to determine whether the Pilgrims were otherworldly saints or extraordinary sinners. By revealing the complex world the Pilgrims inhabited, John G. Turner moves beyond these disparate narratives and “gives an old familiar story remarkable new life and power.”
