The 1776 Campaign that Saved The Cause of Liberty
Remember when America’s scrappy navy took on the full might of Britain’s sea power? Probably not. It was the least known campaign of the Revolutionary War. It was also one of the most crucial. During the summer of 1776, a British attack from Canada loomed. Three men led the Northern Campaign: the underrated general Philip Schuyler; the ambitious former British officer Horatio Gates; and the now notorious Benedict Arnold. That’s right—Benedict Arnold. The experienced sea captain devised a bold and brilliant strategy to defend the newly independent nation he later betrayed. The Patriots constructed a small fleet of gunboats on Lake Champlain in northern New York and confronted the Royal Navy in a desperate three-day battle near Valcour Island. Their brazen efforts surprised the arrogant British and forced them to call off their invasion. The cause of liberty was saved. As they say, the rest is history.
