“When Montezuma Met Cortes: The True Story of the Meeting That Changed History” with Matthew Restall

Here’s what most can agree on. On November 8, 1519, the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortés first met Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, at the entrance to the capital city of Tenochtitlan. As the story goes, the bold and brilliant military genius and a few hundred plucky conquistadors overcame overwhelming odds to defeat the mighty Aztec empire and create a wave of colonial invasions across the hemisphere. But is that what really happened? In this sweeping revisionist account, Matthew Restall busts more than a few myths about this pivotal period in the history of the Americas.
