A woman president? Why not? After all, it’s 1884! Meet the indomitable Belva Ann Lockwood: American attorney, politician, educator and author, and the first woman to run a full national presidential campaign. She once said, “I cannot vote but I can be voted for.”

Listen to her lively campaign speech, detailing her early struggles to break free of social conventions, her fight to be admitted to the Supreme Court bar, and her bid for the presidency representing the newly formed Equal Rights Party. And listen to her sing songs of suffrage advocates.

Thanks to the formidable re-enactor Anne Barrett, you’ll learn more about a truly remarkable woman who worked alongside Susan B. Anthony and other suffragists. She fought for women’s rights…and the highest seat in government office. While she only received 4,194 votes, she helped change the nation.

2020 WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE COMMEMORATION PROGRAMMING
“Gaining the Vote: The Road to Women’s Suffrage” Virtual Series
August 2020 marks the centennial of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing American women the right to vote. The Museums on the Green has been awarded a Discussion Grant from Mass Humanities/the National Endowment for the Humanities to support “Gaining the Vote: The Road to Women’s Suffrage,” a series of virtual talks and performances highlighting the long road to women’s suffrage. We’ll feature upcoming programs in our Calendar as they become available.
